I found this on the blog: Come back to what you know Ok I have a really weird sense of humor, but when I read this I was left with kind of this blank lost look. This is one of those examples where you just say to yourself, man this world is just fucked, the globe is just spinning down the proverbial toilet chasing after a huge log (sorry if your eating lunch right now on the left coast), but hey reading about a dude fucking a bicycle is about on par with the dude marrying a damm dog!

A guy has been found guilty of a crime. What crime I hear you ask?

Murder? Rape? Theft?Nope… he tried to have sex with his bicycle.

Jesus Christ, I hear you exclaim after you finished laughing, why would someone do that, especially in public?

Well actually he was in a locked hostel room. The cleaners used a master key to get into the room and then the manager of the hostel called the police when they reported what they had seen to him.

My first thought was… why on Earth would someone call the police over an incident like this? Sure I’d have thought the manager might have thrown the guy out for upsetting his staff. But the police? If I encountered someone privately having sex with an inanimate object, calling the police wouldn’t even cross my mind, unless they were doing it in a public place with no respect for those who might see them. Would the manager have called the police if it was a woman in bed with a vibrator?

And then my second thought… why did the police arrest him rather than simply move him along with an embarrassed smirk? Surely they have better things to do than protect a mans bike from inappropriate sexual attention.

And then I saw the punishment… three years on the sex offenders register! Why?? Are they scared he might start making love to other peoples bicycles? Perhaps they are worried this is an entry level sexual crime… next thing you know he might be doing cars! BUSES! Don’t let this guy near one of those vacuuming street cleaners.

All in all an embarrassing, if quite amusing, incident has come to cost us, the taxpayer, money for the arrest and prosecution of a man whose actions, while stupid and bizarre, weren’t going to harm anyone else.

Trust me if doing stupid and bizarre stuff that might embarrass (but not significantly harm) others is now illegal then I’ve got a whole list of customers I’d love to turn in to the law. And it’s a very long list. I may need a whole courtroom set aside for the prosecutions for the next few years.

CBS Employee Wanted Sex For Dolphins Tickets, Ron Paul would be outraged!

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (link) — A CBS-TV employee is accused of soliciting sex from an 11-year-old girl in exchange for tickets to a Miami Dolphins football game, police said.Daniel Barron, 56, was arrested and charged with solicitation to commit sexual battery on a child under the age of 12 Saturday.

Police said Barron, a CBS sports television producer, chatted on the Internet with an undercover detective who was posing as a father willing to let Barron have sex with his 11-year-old daughter as well as sleep nude with her in exchange for tickets to the Miami Dolphins football game Sunday.

According to a police report, Barron told the undercover officer that he was looking forward to meeting the daughter, allegedly telling the detective, “I will be very gentle with her.”

St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said that Barron was arrested when he went to meet the people he thought would be the father and daughter in the parking lot of a Ft. Lauderdale hotel on Saturday.

“The first instant message was Saturday afternoon,” Mascara said. “The arrest took place that night with the assistance and participation of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Fort Lauderdale Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Their work on this case was invaluable.”

According to a police report, after his arrest, Barron admitted to also using his CBS-owned computer to download and exchange child porn. He told police his computer could be found in a TV production truck located at Miami Dolphins Stadium, authorities said.

Detective Neil Spector with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office started the investigation by posing as the father of the girl and chatting the first time with Barron, police said.

Barron is currently being held at the Broward County Jail on $75,000 bond.

Spector was critical in another Internet investigation last month when a Nevada couple tried to get who they thought was a 15-year-old girl to run away to Las Vegas to be the husband’s sex partner. Wesley Evans, 39, and Jennifer Evans, 33, were sentenced to 15 and 10 years in prison, respectively, after they were convicted of soliciting sex from a minor over the Internet.

Tonganoxie, Kansas (from Lawrence Journal World) — Tonganoxie Mayor Mike Vestal admitted Friday to sending an e-mail containing the picture of a naked woman and a racist joke to several individuals. He offered to resign his position as mayor, if that is what residents wish.“Oh my God, oh my God. You’ve got to be kidding me. Oh, Lord have mercy,” Vestal said this afternoon when a Journal-World reporter showed him a copy of the e-mail that was sent from his account.

The e-mail opened with the words, “Next Monday is National Female Breast Appreciation Day.” It then showed a picture of a woman and her naked breasts. Underneath the picture were the words, “Beats the fuck out of Martin Luther King Day! Doesn’t It?”

Vestal admitted to sending the e-mail Aug. 31 from his account to a “couple of guys.” He inadvertently sent it to a 6News reporter, and that is how the Journal-World obtained the e-mail.

Vestal apologized to Tonganoxie residents for any embarrassment, and said the e-mail’s content did not represent his beliefs.

“This is something I don’t usually do,” said Vestal, although he stopped short of saying this was the first time he had ever forwarded such an e-mail message. “I should have just deleted it.

“I apologize. I hope people will forgive me. I’m proud of what I do for the city. I don’t know how I’m going to make it up to the people. It will never happen again.

“If the citizens want me to resign, I will resign. It was a bad error in judgment.”

Tonganoxie Councilman Jim Truesdell said Friday that he was shocked by the e-mail.

“That’s obviously wrong,” Truesdell said of the e-mail’s content. “But it is even worse that it mocks Martin Luther King Day and women. It is obviously distasteful.”

Vestal, who was elected in April, works for an answering service that is owned by his wife. The service also has a contract with the city of Tonganoxie to function as the dispatch service for the Tonganoxie Police Department. Vestal sent the e-mail from a computer that he owns, and from an e-mail account that he pays for, he said. But it is the e-mail account that is listed as his official point of contact as the city’s mayor.

Tonganoxie city employees are required to sign an agreement that prohibits employees to “knowingly communicate, download, or forward anything that might be construed as harassing, hostile or offensive based on ethnicity, race, sex, disability, age, religion or national origin.”

Vestal said he never had seen the agreement before, and it was unclear whether he is subject to the agreement as either the city’s mayor or an employee of a contractor that does business with the city.

Vestal said he did not know how many people he sent the e-mail to. The e-mail obtained by the Journal-World did not list the addresses of the recipients, but used a function that hid the addresses from view. Vestal also declined to say who sent him the e-mail, although he said that person was not involved in city government.

Truesdell said the community now would have to decide whether to stand behind its mayor. Truesdell said he was inclined to support Vestal, whom he called a good leader that treated council members fairly.

“I would hate to see him resign or be removed from office. I think he has done a lot of good for the community,” Truesdell said. “But it probably will be up to the people. I could see a lot of people objecting on a lot of different fronts to having someone like that in office.

“But I really don’t think that is Mike Vestal. I don’t think that is who he is.”

Councilman Tom Putthoff declined to comment on the e-mail until he had a chance to discuss it with Vestal. Attempts to reach other council members were unsuccessful.

Mayor says he’ll keep job despite risqué mail

Captain Ed has a good point, commenting on Craig’s potential boot in butt out of the Senate.

(post link) if the (Republican) party wants to start drawing these lines, then one has to wonder why David Vitter isn’t getting the same push.

He didn’t plead guilty in court, but unlike Craig, he openly admits he broke the law and solicited prostitutes. Others serving in Congress at the moment have pleaded guilty to misdemeanors of more import than disorderly conduct without being forced to resign.

 If morality and credibility are at issue, why isn’t Vitter being held to that standard? It’s either that Louisiana’s Democratic governor would appoint a Democrat in his place, or that Vitter’s transgressions involved heterosexual sex and therefore are less objectionable.

Craig will depart soon, and these questions will fade away eventually. However, people will wonder whether the GOP decided to argue for standards in public officials, or whether they just found it easy to use Craig without endangering their political balance in the Senate.

According to an article in today’s Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune, more avid web readership might have saved Sen. Larry Craig’s (R-ID) career.

As a number of TPM Reader/Google sleuths have been telling us, there are sites out there that rate different public sex bathrooms around the country. One of them sounds sort of like it’s the Zagat’s of gay public restroom sex. And that bathroom at the Minneapolis airport is like the Spago of sex bathrooms.

Another Web site lists Twin Cities-area malls, parks, health clubs and even a “cruisy toilet” at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Many postings list the best times to go and give graphic reviews of the venues.An airport bathroom, specifically one near a shoeshine stand behind the ticket counter, generated the most comments until Web-site users posted warnings in June that men were getting arrested there. Craig was arrested shortly after noon on June 11 in the main men’s public restroom of the North Star Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal.

It’s not clear from the article exactly which review web site they’re referring to or whether the warnings about the sting showed up in advance of Craig’s June 11th arrest. But it seems that closer scrutiny of the web and available ratings sites could have kept Craig from his rendezvous with destiny.

Prostitute and pimp Stephen L. Gobie settled in with his “girls” in his Georgetown town house one evening in late 1987 to watch “The Mayflower Madam” on television. As Candice Bergen portrayed upscale madam Sydney Biddle Barrows, Gobie’s companions had an idea.

“The girls turned to me and said, ‘You’re just like her,’ ” Gobie recalled in an interview yesterday. “That’s when I realized that I was in the middle of a developing story that could be worth something someday. I told them, ‘One day, don’t be surprised if you see me on TV.’ “

Gobie’s dream has come true. His accusation that Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) knew that Gobie had operated a prostitution service out of Frank’s Capitol Hill apartment became national news after it was first reported Friday by the Washington Times.

Frank, one of two openly gay members of Congress, confirmed Friday that he paid Gobie for sex, hired him with personal funds as an aide and wrote letters on congressional stationery on his behalf to Virginia probation officials, but Frank said he fired Gobie when he learned that clients were visiting the apartment.

Frank, a leading House liberal, likened himself to Henry Higgins, who in “Pygmalion” tries to transform a cockney waif into a member of English society. Gobie dismissed that as “garbage.” “This is not the case of the poor waif who is being sheltered,” Gobie said. “This was the first time he felt good in a relationship. Here’s a guy who didn’t have a social life until he was 45.”

Gobie’s craving for public attention also has produced an uproar in Montgomery County. Gobie said he maintained a relationship with Gabriel A. Massaro, the principal of Chevy Chase Elementary School, and used an office at the school in late 1987 to make telephone calls and have one client meet a prostitute.

Massaro, who has been placed on administrative leave, has been unavailable for comment.

Gobie said his motive was largely financial. Gobie had offered his story to WUSA-TV (Channel 9), then the Washington Times. Later he came to The Washington Post, saying he was looking “to start a bidding war” for “a better offer” than the Washington Times made. He and the Times say he was not paid.

Gobie also said he wants “to show up people in positions of power who abuse other people.”

Gobie expressed no regret for any damage done to the careers of Frank and Massaro.

Although Frank and Gobie differ in some details of their relationship, they agree on the story line. They met on April Fool’s Day 1985. The representative answered a classified ad in the Washington Blade, the local gay weekly. “Exceptionally good-looking, personable, muscular athlete is available. Hot bottom plus large endowment equals a good time.”

Then in his third term, the 45-year-old representative had not yet stated his homosexuality publicly. He paid Gobie $80 in cash for sex.

Gobie, then 28, was one of many young men “freelancing” in male prostitution. Gobie said he was born in Boston and grew up in a military family. He has felony convictions for possession of cocaine, oral sodomy and production of obscene items involving a juvenile.

Gobie and Frank say they became more friends than sexual partners. Gobie says he attended a bill-signing at the White House, and helped coach and played left field for Frank’s team in the Congressional Softball League. “I was the star player,” Gobie said.

Frank began to help Gobie financially, paying his attorney and court-ordered psychiatrist. The House member also said he hired Gobie as a personal aide, housekeeper and driver, but Gobie said that was a “cover story” concocted for probation officers.

In late 1985, Gobie says, he began to use Frank’s apartment and two other locations for prostitution. Frank knew about the prostitution all along, but it was never explicitly discussed, Gobie says.

“He knew exactly what I was doing,” Gobie said. “It was pretty obvious. If he had to come home early {from work}, he would call home to be sure the coast was clear . . . . He was living vicariously through me. He said it was kind of a thrill, and if he had been 20 years younger he might be doing the same thing.”

Frank denies that he knew, saying he learned from his landlord and kicked Gobie out in August 1987. Gobie supports this part of Frank’s story.

Gobie said his disclosures are only beginning. “I think I’ll just slap a book together. Sydney Biddle Barrows made in excess of a million. I thought ‘Capitol Offenses’ would be a nice title.”

June 19, 1954: A weary Sen. Lester C. Hunt (D.-Wyo) walked his Senate office.  At 61, the former Wyoming governor was serving his first term in the Senate and was by far his party’s strongest candidate to win the seat again — critical to his party, as the Senate was almost evenly split, with 48 Democrats, 47 Republicans, and one Independent.  But Hunt was being blackmailed — reportedly even by one of his colleagues: if he ran again, Hunt was told not so subtly, the hitherto secret police report that the senator’s son had been arrested for soliciting sex from an undercover police detective in Washington DC’s Lafayette Square the year before would be made public. 

That evening, in his office, the distraught Hunt took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Published reports at the time said that Hunt’s suicide resulted “because he had cancer,” as Facts on File for 1954 says.  Seasoned Capitol Hill political reporters such as Allen Drury knew better and Hunt’s dark secret, while known to colleagues and those who covered them, remained that. 

But a few years later, when Drury wrote his epic political novel Advise and Consent, the Hunt tragedy is moved to fiction, sort of:  Sen. Brigham Anderson (R.-UT.), war hero and U.S. Senator from Utah (Drury never mentions political parties in A&C, but a senator from Utah would almost certainly have to be a conservative Republican), is being blackmailed to vote for a controversial nominee for secretary of state with the story that he had a relationship with a buddy in the military while stationed overseas in World War II.  Shaken by this and what the news will do to his wife and young daughter, Anderson takes his own life in his Senate office with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In an interview on May 14, Craig told the Idaho Statesman he’d never engaged in sex with a man or solicited sex with a man. The Craig interview was the culmination of a Statesman investigation that began after a blogger accused Craig of homosexual sex in October. Over five months, the Statesman examined rumors about Craig dating to his college days and his 1982 pre-emptive denial that he had sex with underage congressional pages.The most serious finding by the Statesman was the report by a professional man with close ties to Republican officials. The 40-year-old man reported having oral sex with Craig at Washington’s Union Station, probably in 2004. The Statesman also spoke with a man who said Craig made a sexual advance toward him at the University of Idaho in 1967 and a man who said Craig “cruised” him for sex in 1994 at the REI store in Boise. The Statesman also explored dozens of allegations that proved untrue, unclear or unverifiable….

In the hourlong May 14 interview, Craig was accompanied by his wife, Suzanne. He specifically and generally denied ever engaging in any homosexual conduct.

During that interview, the Statesman played Craig an audiotape of the man claiming that he and Craig had sex in the Union Station restroom. Like the Minnesota airport restroom, the Union Station restroom is known as a place where men can find anonymous sex.

Craig denied the man’s account and said, “I am not gay and I have never been in a restroom in Union Station having sex with anybody.

“There’s a very clear bottom line here,” Craig said. “I don’t do that kind of thing. I am not gay, and I never have been.”

Craig’s accuser spoke to the Statesman on the condition he not be named. The man said he was sure it was Craig he had oral sex with but said he had no evidence other than his word.

Craig also denied the claims of the two other men that he made sexual advances to them.

One man, who was considering pledging with Craig’s fraternity at the U of I in 1967, said Craig took him to his room and made what the man said he took to be an invitation to sex. Responding to that allegation in May, Craig said, “I don’t hit on any men.”

Another man said that in November 1994 Craig “cruised” him at the REI store in Boise. The man, who is gay, told the Statesman that Craig stared at him in a sexually inviting way and followed him around REI for a half-hour. Said Craig: “Once again, I’m not gay, and I don’t cruise, and I don’t hit on men. I have no idea how he drew that conclusion. A smile? Here is one thing I do out in public: I make eye contact, I smile at people, they recognize me, they say, ‘Oh, hi, Senator.’ Or, ‘Do I know you?’

“I’ve been in this business 27 years in the public eye here. I don’t go around anywhere hitting on men, and by God, if I did, I wouldn’t do it in Boise, Idaho! Jiminy!”….

But when she goes back for more this September, she’ll be hit with a bill five times that amount, something she says will definitely affect her spending. “It will cut into the kinds of notebooks I buy to the kind of groceries I get to the cable package that I order,” she says.

Because of agreements with pharmaceutical companies, most campus clinics were able to distribute brand name prescription contraceptives, from pills to the patch to a monthly vaginal device like NuvaRing, for no more than a couple of bucks.That all ended earlier this year. Health experts say the price bump for college students was inadvertent — a byproduct of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, a federal law that went into effect in January. The law alters how drug makers calculate Medicaid-related rebates paid to states, but it ultimately made it expensive for companies to offer schools such deep discounts on birth control. As a result, brand name prescription prices for campus clinics rose from about the $3 to $10 range per month to the $30 to $50 range. Organon, the maker of Cyclessa and Desogen birth control pills and the NuvaRing, says the company is not happy about having to increase prices for colleges. But Nick Hart, Organon’s executive director of contraception, says they were forced to make “a business decision” after the law went into effect.

A 2006 survey conducted by the American College Health Association (ACHA) found that 39% of undergraduate women use oral contraceptives. Many providers are afraid that if the convenience of free or cheap birth control on campus is taken away, female students might just get turned off by prescription birth control methods altogether and use other less effective ones like condoms or Plan B, known as the morning after pill.

 According to Planned Parenthood, and many worry if students skip out on it or move to a method they’re not as comfortable with, it can lead to more unwanted student pregnancies. “I think there are some who will just try to wing it and see how it goes. They’ll say ‘Well I go to school here, my boyfriend is in another city and I only see him once or twice a month and I won’t use anything’ rather than pay for something they can’t afford.

Tran: “I have friends who refuse to talk to their parents about it, they’re unable to get under their insurance, can’t afford to get their own insurance and are already working just to pay tuition,” she says. “Some have stopped already and are taking stock in Plan B and having that around because they don’t have regular intercourse.”

Yes the media is absolutely sure that university students are just too fucken stupid to stay out of such trouble. Shit, we can’t expect students to think of their future, finish school, get their degree and begin their lives in a planned and sensible way, can we?

One of Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson’s top organizers in rural Nevada resigned Thursday after the campaign learned he had worked for a brothel and was wanted on a felony arrest warrant in California.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles will settle its clergy abuse cases for at least $600 million, by far the largest payout in the church’s sexual abuse scandal, The Associated Press learned Saturday.Attorneys for the archdiocese and alleged victims are expected to announce the deal Monday, the day the first of more than 500 clergy abuse cases was scheduled for jury selection, according to two people with knowledge of the agreement. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the settlement had not been made public.

The archdiocese and its insurers will pay between $600 million and $650 million to about 500 plaintiffs—an average of $1.2 to $1.3 million per person. The settlement also calls for the release of confidential priest personnel files after review by a judge assigned to oversee the litigation, the sources said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the payout would be split between the insurers, the archdiocese and several Roman Catholic religious orders. A judge must sign off on the agreement, and final details were being ironed out over the weekend.

Tod Tamberg, an archdiocese spokesman, did not immediately return a call for comment.

The settlement would be the largest ever by a Roman Catholic archdiocese since the clergy sexual abuse scandal erupted in Boston in 2002.

Among the largest total payouts was $100 million in 2004 by the Diocese of Orange, Calif., to settle 90 claims. The Diocese of Covington, Ky., last year agreed to pay $84 million for 552 cases. Facing a flood of abuse claims, five dioceses—Tucson, Ariz.; Spokane, Wash.; Portland, Ore.; Davenport, Iowa, and San Diego—sought bankruptcy protection.

Last month, the Archdiocese of Portland agreed to pay about $52 million to 175 victims, while setting aside another $20 million for anyone who comes forward in the future.

The Diocese of Spokane, Wash., also recently emerged from bankruptcy protection after agreeing to pay $48 million to settle about 150 claims.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Imprisoned hotel heiress Paris Hilton has said she believes God has given her a new chance and she plans to stop acting dumb and put her influence to good use.

Hilton called television journalist Barbara Walters on Sunday from the medical wing of a Los Angeles jail, where she is being held for violating probation in a drunken-driving case, and Walters recounted the conversation on her ABC television show “The View” on Monday.

“I’m not the same person I was,” Hilton told Walters. “I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In her first public comments since a prison sentence, celebrity heiress and reality TV star Paris Hilton has described her 45-day jail term for a driving related offense as cruel and unwarranted.

Visibly shocked and tearful, Hilton was sentenced on Friday to 45 days in jail after a judge ruled she knowingly violated her probation on a previous traffic offense by driving without a valid license.

SEATTLE —  A Web site created by a pedophile is a virtual “how-to” manual, complete with the best places in western Washington state to see little girls, and tips on how to avoid getting caught by the police.

The site, titled “Seattle-Tacoma-Everett Girl Love,” has been around for a few years. The police know all about it, yet they say they can’t shut it down because the site is legal.

“As disturbing and offensive as we find this, there’s no evidence of a crime, or even suspicion of illegal activity,” said Rebecca Hover of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department.

The man who runs it, 45-year-old Jack McClellan, has never been convicted of a sex crime, which means he can attend any family-friendly events where children are present, and take all the pictures he wants for his Web site. He also lives close to a school bus stop.

McClellan says his purpose is to promote association, friendship and legal, consensual hugging and cuddling between men and pre-pubescent girls. He admitted to FOX News that his “age of attraction” is between 3 and 11 years old.

“I guess the main thing is I just think they’re cute, a lot cuter than women. I admit there is kind of an erotic arousal there,” McClellan said.

“It makes me happy simply. Like I said, I think girls are cute, beautiful, just children in general make me happy … being around lots of them. … I’m doing what anyone else would do with a hobby. If someone’s into birds they’re taking pictures of birds. I’m convinced that none of these images are illegal.”

McClellan wants to bring pedophiles out of the closet and give them a way to get some relief, by going out and being around little girls. He suggests a number of places, such as plays at elementary schools, parks, swimming pools and libraries.

CLINTON, S.C. - The arrest of two women teachers on charges of having sex with their male students has brought cries of lingering racism in one of South Carolina’s most conservative counties and evoked some of the South’s oldest and deepest-seated racial taboos.Both women are white. The boys — six in all — are black.

Some of the blacks who make up more than a quarter of Laurens County’s 70,000 residents are upset over the handling of the two cases, particularly the release of the teachers on bail.

They say the cases reflect the way crimes by whites against blacks in the segregated South were treated less seriously than other offenses, and blacks who leveled accusations against whites were less likely to be believed.

“If this had been black teachers, they would not be out of jail right now,” said Corinnie Young, a 49-year-old bookstore employee who is black.

Some blacks shudder to think what would have happened if the teachers were black men and the students were white girls.

“I can assure you if it were an African American male who committed such an offense against a white female, history shows us that the charges, the punishment and the sentencing would be totally different,” said state NAACP president Lonnie Randolph. “The system ain’t blind when the perpetrator is an African American male or female or when the victim is a white female.”

(CNSNews.com) - A [tag]Dutch political party[/tag] that failed to qualify to participate in the country’s general election Wednesday has blamed harassment from “far right” elements that took issue with its [tag]pro-pedophilia[/tag] platform.

The PNVD was forced to end its campaign recently after it was unable to obtain the signatures required for it to contest the election.

Although the party only needed 570 signatures - 30 from each of the [tag]Netherlands[/tag]’ 19 regions - and had failed to reach even that modest target, a conservative family organization in the U.S. warned that the episode should be taken seriously despite the fringe nature of the group.

“I think we should take it as warning here in America,” said Janice Crouse, senior fellow at [tag]Concerned Women for America[/tag].

“Certainly this is coming here and there are people already in America who want to say that children enjoy sex and that children ought to be taught sex by adults,” she said.

PNVD party secretary Norbert de Jonge told Cybercast News Service in a telephone interview that people who wanted to sign in support of the party’s candidacy had been threatened and intimidated.

People who were willing to sign had been afraid that opponents - “especially right-wing parties and their fans” - would gather the names and addresses of signatories and harass them, he said.

“They were afraid that they would be made [out to be] pedophiles or that they would be outed if they actually were pedophiles,” said de Jonge.

“And so people were afraid to sign. That’s why eventually only a very small percentage of what we needed … signed for our party.”

PNVD’s Dutch acronym transliterates to [tag]Party for Neighborly Love, Freedom, and Diversity[/tag]. It bears the Latin motto “sapere aude” which means “Dare to know” or “Dare to be wise.”

The party is known for lobbying to lower the age of sexual consent from 16 to 12 in the Netherlands and having the eventual goal of eliminating the age of consent entirely among other controversial issues.

De Jonge said the failure to gain enough signatures to run in the 2006 election was a setback but by no means a failure: The party would keep on trying and believed Dutch society’s views on sex with children may shift by the next election.

“We’re just not the kind of people to give up so we’re going to continue, and maybe if we do not succeed in four years maybe we will succeed in eight years,” he said.

Warning for US

De Jonge said the party had been encouraged by developments in recent years.

“We think that things are changing, because in the last 10 years or so, the whole aspect of pedophilia could not be discussed by anyone, especially not in the media,” he asserted.

“Part of what we’re trying to do is we’re trying to change the mentality of the people. This is something we think is changing and … we call that a small success in what we’re doing as a party,” de Jonge said.

Getting the required number of signatures would not be that difficult, he argued.

“We see that it is possible for people again to talk about this, and we think that’s a good thing, because we don’t want there to be any taboos. We don’t need that many people to support us in order to be able to get a seat in the chamber.”

Crouse said the situation in the Netherlands should trigger an alarm in the U.S.

She told Cybercast News Service that although the U.S. does not have a formal political party advocating pedophilia, the attitudes exist.

“The same arguments that they are using in the Netherlands are being used here in the United States. They just have not gained public attention in quite the same way and have not moved to launch a political campaign in quite the same way,” she said.

“There’s no question that this is the logical next step,” continued Crouse.

“The radical left is going to push every door possible to see what will open and provide greater opportunity to do the kinds of things that they want to do that have supposedly no consequences. They want to convince the American public that anything anybody wants to do is okay,” she said.

‘Breaking taboos’

De Jonge insists that his party is not just for pedophiles but also promotes “child emancipation.”

“People [need to] change the opinion. It’s not just that we would do this for pedophiles but also that it’s better for the child to have more freedom in regards to how they want to experience their sexuality and how they want to discover their sexuality.”

The PNVD’s platform also covers issues including legalization of what it calls “soft” drugs for 12-year-olds, vegetarianism, and radical expansion of social benefits.

De Jonge said the platform covered a much wider spectrum than pedophilia and expressed frustration that the child sex aspect had garnered the most attention. He freely admitted, however, that he and the party’s two other leaders, are in fact pedophiles.

“Nearly the only thing that’s being talked about with regard to our party is the pedophile aspect of it - that we want to change the age of consent,” de Jonge said. “We do not agree. We are not a pedophile party. But personally I don’t think it’s strange that people started calling us a pedophile party because the board members - we are, all three of us - pedophiles.”

Despite this, de Jonge said he wished the media would maintain “a much more neutral position” when reporting on the party.

“We want to break through taboos and dogmas in the hope to take away fear and intolerance.”

Crouse cautioned that Americans should not dismiss such attitudes lightly.

“I would stress the fact that it would be easy to dismiss this story and say, well this is the Netherlands - that’s how they are and many of the weird ideas that are in the public square come from the Netherlands,” she said.

“But I think we should take it as a warning that there is nothing to keep people who are radical left in our country from taking encouragement from cases like this,” Crouse added.

In Wednesday’s parliamentary election, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende’s center-right Christian Democrats are facing a strong challenge from a left-leaning Labor-led alliance. The [tag]Netherlands[/tag] has a population of 16.5 million, of which some 12.3 million are eligible to vote.

“I don’t know why you’re reading that on WTOP,” Webb told host Mark Plotkin. “I think it’s a little bit inappropriate.”

Plotkin was reading an excerpt from Webb’s novel “Something to Die For,” in which Webb describes a female stripper performing sexual acts with a banana.

“I don’t think that’s appropriate for you to read on WTOP,” Webb said again as Plotkin finished the excerpt. (Washington Post Radio is WTOP’s sister station.)

The campaign of Republican Sen. George Allen on Thursday released excerpts from some of the war novels Webb wrote between 1978 and 2002. The books include some graphic sexual passages, as well as frequent uses of a racial slur for blacks and descriptions of Vietnamese women as “monkey-faced.”

Among the excerpts is a scene from the 2002 novel “Lost Soldiers,” in which a man embraces his four-year-old son and places the boy’s penis in his mouth.

 Webb told Plotkin regarding the “Lost Soldiers” excerpt. “I actually saw this happen in a slum in Bangkok when I was there as a journalist.”

“The duty of a writer is to illuminate his surroundings,” he added.

Coincidentally, a Cambodian woman in Las Vegas is facing sexual assault charges for performing a similar act on her young son, according to an Oct. 14 report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The article quotes an office manager for the Cambodian Association of America, who described the act as a sign of respect or love.

“It’s an exception,” Thira Srey told the Review-Journal of the practice. According to the report, the act is usually performed by a mother or caretaker on a child who is one year old or younger. In Webb’s novel, the child is four years old.

Webb criticized the Allen campaign for focusing on excerpts from his novels.

“The most important issue facing the country, he hasn’t got a statement to make on it,” Webb said of the Iraq war. “This country’s been breaking into pieces economically … they’ve got no position on that.
