(Story Link) POTTSTOWN — A simple sign in the window of the local Barack Obama campaign headquarters has reignited a conversation about convicted felons’ right to vote in this country.

The poster board welcomed all passersby to register to vote and included the statement: “Felons can vote.” The sign, which was visible at the office opening a week ago, has since been removed.

A lifesize cardboard printout of the presumptive Democratic nominee for president has replaced the sign. A spokesman from the Philadelphia campaign office said this decision was made at the local level.

“They just realized maybe it was sending the wrong message and took it down themselves,” Sean Smith said.

In this case, the individual probably wanted to educate people on who is eligible to vote, he added, explaining why the sign was posted in the front window of the High and Penn streets office.

Smith said individual field coordinators do have a significant amount of autonomy. They are encouraged to use good judgment and integrate themselves into the communities they work in.

“They are to act in accordance with norms and be our ambassadors to those communities,” he said.

The Pottstown office coordinator — like many in similar positions — is not authorized to speak to the media at this time.

Michael Slater, spokesman for Project Vote, did not see anything wrong with placing such a sign in the campaign’s window.

“That should be applauded, not repudiated or criticized,” Slater said.

He said denying people the right to vote after they have served their sentence is “punitive not rehabilitative.”

An unscientific poll conducted by The Mercury asked Web site visitors: “What do you think of the ‘Felons can vote’ signs in the Obama campaign office window?”

With nearly 200 votes tabulated, 48.7 percent responded, “They are informative, nothing else.”

Twenty-two percent selected, “Why is he courting felons?”

Twelve percent responded, “Who cares?”

Nine percent didn’t know felons had the right to vote, while 7.6 responded to, “I find it offensive. Pottstown isn’t composed of felons.”

Nationwide, a patchwork of laws concerning felons’ right to vote differ from state-to-state.

A Pennsylvania court ruled in 2000 that the state law prohibiting convicted felons from registering to vote for five years after their release from prison is unconstitutional, according to the Montgomery County Web site.

Today, convicted felons who have been released from prison have the right to cast a ballot in Pennsylvania. Applicants completing an older version of the voter registration form are instructed to cross out the felony conviction line.

Project Vote is an organization based in Washington, D.C. that advocates for full participation in the election process. They say the United States is the only country that allows states to choose permanent disenfranchisement of felons, even after completion of their sentences.

Ok this is how my mind works. I have seen this story on various sites, but this morning I saw it on several “black” websites so all I had to do was check out the demographics of the town to get to the root of the problem.

Based on U.S. Census reports for both cities prior to the merger, the 2000 population of the area comprising Helena-West Helena was 15,012. There were 5,516 households, and 3,765 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 31.85% White, 66.63% African American, Asian, 0.01% Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.
Too many Niggas no Asians or Mexicans, why that one Mexican remains is a mystery.
This 24 hour curfew is of course racist.

The song brags about an Obama presidency being destiny. It uses an expletive to describe Clinton, calls Bush “mentally handicapped” and says McCain doesn’t belong in “any chair unless he’s paralyzed.”

The lyrics also don’t spare the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who recently apologized for making crude comments about Obama. “If you said it then you meant it,” intones the rapper.

Obama’s campaign blasted “Politics As Usual,” which is on the “Gangsta Grillz: The Preview” mixtape with Atlanta spinner DJ Drama.

“As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesn’t want his daughters or any children exposed to,” campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in an e-mail statement. “This song is not only outrageously offensive to Sen. Clinton, Rev. Jackson, Sen. McCain and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with the values we hold dear. While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics.”

First of all this story is a precursor to the two party CNN special they are having about called: Black in America.

First the CNN program is in my estimation embarrassing and insulting.
I’m not going to go into a lot of detail on this because this program is just another attempt to put us all in categories or groups. Will CNN run a series on Asians in America, or Hispanics in America highlighting their uniqueness. Blacks are the only group in America that has the benefit of constant excuses and explanations, which is not really a benefit. It serves to the detriment of black folks.

As for this web story “Could an Obama presidency hurt black Americans?” Hurt Negros, of course not, but what I have said before and I will no doubt repeat often if Obama is elected Negros will act like damm fools. I can see the ghettoized types partying in the streets, becoming more belligerent towards law enforcement and just about any other white authority figure. You will see more discrimination lawsuits as racial tension builds in workplaces.

The bald truth of the matter is that they’re better than I am, and it doesn’t arouse a flicker of racial feeling in me to acknowledge it. They have enriched and elevated my own experience of life.

On the other hand, I am sick to death of black people as a group. The truth. That is part of the conversation Obama is asking for, isn’t it? I live in an eastern state almost exactly on the fabled Mason-Dixon line. Every day I see young black males wearing tee shirts down to their knees — and jeans belted just above their knees. I’m an old guy. I want to smack them. All of them. They are egregious stereotypes. It’s impossible not to think the unthinkable N-Word when they roll up beside you at a stoplight in their trashed old Hondas with 19-inch spinner wheels and rap recordings that shake the foundations of the buildings. It’s like a broadcast dare: Go ahead! Call me a nigger! And then I’ll cap your ass.

Here’s the dirty secret all of us know and no one will admit to. There ARE niggers. Black people know it. White people know it. It was a big room, about 1400 people, a much older crowd who didn’t really know anything about O&A. Jimmy did well. Lisa Lampanelli was the host, she was brutal and tremendous. Jeffrey Ross was great except for something he did with a song. One female comic did about 12 minutes without a single laugh. Artie Lange took a few shots at O&A but no one in the room got what he was talking about. Artie is getting so fat, he needs help. Opie is especially worried about him and says that Artie looks worse than when Cartman got fatter on South Park (”Beef cake!”). They wonder if Richard Belzer might have been on something. O&A entered the room following a slow-moving old guy from Sgt Bilko whom they thought could have died on the spot. Barack Obama’s campaign website features a post titled “Unleashing America from Injustice,” in which he says he “was completely distraught after discovering the term-homosexual-was added to the bible, in 1976, and then removed, in 2001 and 2006, without any consideration to the many victims who committed suicide or were murdered because of their sexual preference of homosexuality.”

A homosexual man who has a blog on Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign website is suing two major Christian publishers for violating his constitutional rights and causing emotional pain, because the Bible versions they publish refer to homosexuality as a sin.

Bradley LaShawn Fowler, 39, of Canton, Mich., is seeking $60 million from Zondervan and another $10 million from Thomas Nelson Publishing in lawsuits filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Fowler filed his claim against Grand Rapids-based Zondervan Monday, alleging its Bibles’ references to homosexuality as a sin have made him an outcast from his family and contributed to physical discomfort and periods of “demoralization, chaos and bewilderment,” the paper said.

He filed suit against Tennessee publisher Thomas Nelson in June.

Zondervan says that even if Fowler’s claim is credible, he’s suing the wrong party. A company spokesman told WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids that Zondervan doesn’t translate the Bible or own the copyright for any of the translations but relies, instead, on the “scholarly judgment of credible translation committees.”

TALLAHASSEE — A black Republican group has put up billboards around Florida — including Pinellas and Hillsborough counties — and in South Carolina saying the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican.

Black leaders say the claim is ridiculous.

The National Black Republican Association’s billboards show the civil rights leader and the words “Martin Luther King Jr. was REPUBLICAN.”

Told of the billboards, the Rev. Joseph Lowery let out a soft chuckle that grew stronger as he began to think more about the idea.

“These guys never give up, do they?” said Lowery, who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with King. “Lord have mercy.”

Seven billboards have gone up in six Florida counties and another in Orangeburg, S.C., said Frances Rice, the group’s chairwoman. Part of the group’s mission is to highlight what she said is the Democratic Party’s racist past.

“I knew the King family well. We were all Republicans,” said Rice, 64. “There was no way Dr. King would have wanted to be in the party of the Ku Klux Klan.”

The King Center in Atlanta says there is no proof that King was ever a Republican. Rice stands by her claim. She said she was asked by the King Center to take down the billboards, but she refused. “I said, ‘If you want us to stop, sue us.’ But they don’t want to come into court because they know they’ll have to tell the truth,” Rice said.

Rice said the group plans more radio ads in the areas where the billboards are as well as a mail campaign, and T-shirts and buttons with the message.

In Tampa, Clarissa Robinson, sat in her car directly under the billboard and looked up at it.

“Why’d they put that up there?” said Robinson, 22, who is black and a Democrat. “So nobody (will) vote for (Democrat Barack) Obama. They’re trying to make us vote for the other guy.”

Lowery, who knew King well, said there is no reason why anyone would think King was a Republican. He said King most certainly voted for President John Kennedy, and the only time he openly talked about politics was when he criticized Republican Barry Goldwater during the 1964 presidential campaign.

“It’s purely propaganda and poppycock,” Lowery said. “Even if he was, he would have nothing to do with what the Republican Party stands for today. Do they think Martin would support George W. Bush and the war in Iraq?”

In The Autobiography of Martin Luther King Jr., published after his death from his written material and records, King called the Republican national convention that nominated Goldwater a “frenzied wedding … of the KKK and the radical right.”

The Republican Party of Florida refused to discuss the billboards.

The evidence reportedly proves that Conyers received either a payment or payments in connection with the city-approved sludge contract.

Conyers was a vocal opponent of the $47 million a year Synagro contract, but changed her position and eventually voted for the deal when it passed by 5-4 vote in November.

I found this video on Not Another CONspiracy featuring Rev Manning. Although this dude tends to get a wee bit animated in his video sermons as he uses the bible to beat people over the head with his analysis his general message is pretty sound as it is in this clip.

Since I was very young I have always been confused at the mindset of Negros and how most have this “follow the leader” mentality in that most tend to speak with the same sociological, ideological and political voice. No other racial or ethnic group of folks does this.

Although Election Day is still more than four months off, Lee told a film festival audience in Silver Spring, Md., last week that the Illinois senator will be going all the way, according to the Reuters news agency.

“It’s going to be before Obama, ‘B.B.,’ and after Obama — ‘A.B.’ — and some folks need to get used to this,” Lee said Thursday. “And I’m going to be at the inauguration — getting my hotel reservation now.”

In vouching for Obama, Lee also told the audience, “We need a real chocolate city.” Lee has endorsed Obama’s candidacy.

The words echoed remarks New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s made in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Nagin called for a more “chocolate” New Orleans, advocating the return displaced blacks back to the city.

Lee later explicitly endorsed Obama, as someone who would set the right course. “It’s not an if … he changes the world. He changes how the world looks at the United States,” Lee said.

It would be good for artists, too, who he said reflect the atmosphere around them. “It’s going to be a new day. Not just a new day, a better day.”

A drug raid at San Diego State University last week made headlines. Student drug dealers were caught openly selling drugs to fellow students over the Internet, in fraternity houses and in dormitories. The arrests of children of privilege is noteworthy mostly because of its rarity. Despite rampant drug use on many college campuses, student dealers and users seldom risk prosecution.The novelty of the SDSU raid stands in sharp contrast to the contents of two reports issued last week about the nation’s 30-year “war on drugs.” The reports detail the devastating effects of a drug policy that has targeted poor blacks in inner cities even as rates of illegal drug use have remained similar for blacks and whites.

The reports, one by the Sentencing Project and the other by Human Rights Watch, rely on federal law enforcement data to document racial disparity in drug arrests and imprisonment. The statistics show a consistent pattern of discriminatory enforcement that has sent blacks — young men especially, but black women as well — to prison at rates disproportionate to their presence in the population.

According to the Human Rights Watch report, African-American men are nearly 12 times as likely to be imprisoned for drug convictions as whites. In its report, “Targeting Blacks: Drug Enforcement and Race in the United States,” Human Rights Watch includes statistics from the 2003 National Corrections Reporting Program. Combined reports from the 34 states that responded show that blacks are imprisoned for drug crimes at a rate of 256 for every 100,000 African-Americans. Whites were imprisoned at a rate of 25 per 100,000. In California the rate was 280 blacks in prison for drug crimes per 100,000 compared to 26 for whites.

The incarceration strategy has had a destructive impact on black communities. For black men, imprisonment carries a stain that is impossible to erase. It leads to joblessness and hopelessness that in turn translates into more crime.

It has contributed to the widespread belief among African-Americans that the criminal justice system is racist, that young black men selling nickel bags of crack in the gritty inner city of San Diego are more likely to be arrested, prosecuted and sent to prison than young white men who sell drugs out of frat houses. The reports give those beliefs substance.

The point here is not to treat white drug dealers more harshly. What the nation needs is a drug strategy that treats everyone equally and moves from a failed strategy of expensive incarceration toward greater emphasis on treatment, education and creating other opportunities; programs less damaging to individuals and communities.

Black community leaders often appeal to the police to be more vigilant in arresting these people. I’m thinking good, if more prisons need to be constructed to remove from society people who obviously show contempt for a criminal free society then so be it.
