Two Muslim women at Barack Obama’s rally in Detroit Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women’s headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.
The campaign has apologized to the women, all Obama supporters who said they felt betrayed by their treatment at the rally.
“This is of course not the policy of the campaign. It is offensive and counter to Obama’s commitment to bring Americans together and simply not the kind of campaign we run,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “We sincerely apologize for the behavior of these volunteers.”
Building a human backdrop to a political candidate, a set of faces to appear on television and in photographs, is always a delicate exercise in demographics and political correctness. Advance staffers typically pick supporters out of a crowd to reflect the candidate’s message.
When Obama won North Carolina amid questions about his ability to connect with white voters, for instance, he stood in front of a group of middle-aged white women waving small American flags. Across the aisle, a Hispanic New Hampshire Democrat, Roberto Fuentes, told Politico that he was recently asked, and declined, to contribute to the “diversity” of the crowd behind Senator John McCain at a Nashua event.
But for Obama, the old-fashioned image-making contrasts with his promise to transcend identity politics, and to embrace all elements of America. The incidents in Michigan, which has one of the largest Arab and Muslim populations in the country, also raise an aspect of his campaign that sometimes rubs Muslims the wrong way: The candidate has vigorously denied a false, viral rumor that he himself is Muslim. But the denials seem to some at times to imply that there something wrong with the faith, though Obama occasionally adds that he means no disrespect to Islam.
“I was coming to support him, and I felt like I was discriminated against by the very person who was supposed to be bringing this change, who I could really relate to,” said Hebba Aref, a 25-year-old lawyer who lives in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills. “The message that I thought was delivered to us was that they do not want him associated with Muslims or Muslim supporters.”

McLEAN (AP) - Textbooks at a private Islamic school in Northern Virginia teach students that it is permissible for Muslims to kill adulterers and converts from Islam, according to a federal investigation released Wednesday.
Other passages in the school’s textbooks state that “the Jews conspired against Islam and its people” and that Muslims are permitted to take the lives and property of those deemed “polytheists.”
The passages were found in selected textbooks used during the 2007-08 school year by the Islamic Saudi Academy, which teaches 900 students in grades K-12 at two campuses in Alexandria and Fairfax and receives much of its funding from the Saudi government.
The academy has come under scrutiny from critics who charge that it fosters an intolerant brand of Islam similar to that taught in the conservative Saudi kingdom. In the review, the panel recommended that the school make all of its textbooks available to the State Department so changes can be made before the next school year.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, a panel formed by Congress, last year recommended that the school be closed amid concerns that it promotes violence and too closely mimics the conservative Saudi educational system.

“While they accuse the Nazis or others so that Jews would seem persecuted and try to benefit from international sympathy, they were the first to invent the methods of evil and oppression,” the narrator says.
As part of the documentary, Amin Dabur, head of the Palestinian Center for Strategic Research, called the Holocaust “a joke” and said it was “part of the perfect show that Ben Gurion put on.”
“[He] focused on strong and energetic youth [for Israel], while the rest - the disabled, the handicapped, and the people with special needs were sent [to die],” Dabur charged. “They were sent [to die] so there would be a holocaust, so Israel could ‘play’ it for the world sympathy,” he said.
The narrator says the “alleged numbers” of Jews killed in the Holocaust was exaggerated for propaganda purposes.
“Holocaust denial has been a common theme in the Palestinian Authority for many years, among politicians [and] academics both from the Fatah and the Hamas,” PMW director, Itamar Marcus told Cybercast News Service.
“What’s unusual about this it’s a new sinister twist where they’re acknowledging that Jews were killed, but they’re saying they were killed by Jews themselves for the purpose of genetic enrichment, which is of course a horrific libel,” Marcus said.
At the opening of the annual commemoration for Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day on Wednesday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the voices of Holocaust deniers are still being heard.
“Their animosity drives them insane, and they foolishly deny the greatest horror ever known to humanity. To them — the haters, the deniers and the devisers of malice, wherever they may be — and to all those who allow them to act, we say on this day: never again!” Olmert told those gathered at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem, the country’s main holocaust memorial.
“Historical accuracy does not interest you. You wish to deny the justifiability of the existence of a Jewish state — and (you) are wrong to think that the Jewish state was established as a result of the Holocaust,” Olmert said. He added that Holocaust deniers believe that if they invalidate the Holocaust, they can also invalidate the reason for the existence of the State of Israel.
Olmert wondered who would have believed that 63 years after the end of World War II, “hatred of Jews and Israelis would rear its ugly head in so many different places around the globe, provocatively and venomously, inciting hatred.”
Hamas, which has the support of Iran, is sworn to the destruction of Israel. The organization, which is on the State Department’s list of terrorist organizations, wants to establish an Islamic Palestinian state in all of the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Israel.
While waiting to speak at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee last night, I was given a tour of the Student Union, the venue for my talk. The Union building also houses the offices of student clubs, funded by mandatory student fees. On the bulletin board outside the office of the Muslim Students’ Association a flyer was posted, which was part of a campaign against my appearance. It was titled “Getting to Know David Horowitz,” and featured a section headed “Who is David Whorowitz?” At the top of the page was an anti-Semitic caricature of a Jew in the classic style familiar from the Nazi posters of the 1930s, which have become ubiquitous in the Arab world. The Jew in the caricature was standing in a garbage can with the cover on his head, dressed in a Nazi uniform, with an armband marked “H” for “Horowitz,” and the caption read “Horowitz Awareness Week.” This is the central of the tropes of the Muslim Students’ Association campaign on college campuses across the country: Jews are Nazis. “Bring your white sheets and brown shirts and COME ON DOWN! Flaming crosses and Stars of David will be supplied to those who arrive early.”
On the side of the garbage one can read a series of slanders about me that have been given currency by radical professors and the secular left on college campuses: “Muzzling Academics, Blacklisting, Hate Mongering, Race Baiting, Spying…” The flyer describes me as an “Israeli apologist and Judeofascist, and claims that I ran an ad in the university newspaper “alleging that a UWM student group, the Muslim Students’ Association, is an extremist organization engaged in violent jihad.”
What the ad stated was that the Muslim Students’ Association was created by the Muslim Brotherhood and is part of its jihad network. The motto of the Muslim Brotherhood is: “God is our objective, the Quran is our constitution, the Prophet is our leader, jihad is our way and death for the sake of God is the highest of our aspirations.” There are more than 150 affiliated chapters of the Muslim Students’ Association on college campuses across the country, all funded by student activities fees and by outside sources that are not disclosed. At the University of Pennsylvania, the Muslim Students’ Association boasts a $50,000 annual budget. Of this total $20,000 comes from student fees. By contrast, College Democrats and College Republicans at the University of Pennsylvania receive no student funding.

The inhabitants wouldn’t let him into the compound, but he talked to some of the locals, and found out a good deal:
Islamberg is not as benign as a Buddhist monastery or a Carmelite convent. Nearly every weekend, neighbors hear sounds of gunfire. Some, including a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, have heard the bang of small explosives. None of the neighbors wished to be identified for fear of “retaliation.” “We don’t even dare to slow down when we drive by,” one resident said. “They own the mountain and they know it and there is nothing we can do about it but move, and we can’t even do that. Who wants to buy a property near that?”The complex serves to scare the bejeesus out of the local residents. “If you go there, you better wear body armor,” a customer at the Circle E Diner in Hancock said. “They have armed guards and if they shoot you, nobody will find your body.”
At Cousins, a watering hole in nearby Deposit, a barfly, who didn’t wish to be identified, said: “The place is dangerous. You can hear gunfire up there. I can’t understand why the FBI won’t shut it down.”
Islamberg is a branch of Muslims of the Americas Inc., a tax-exempt organization formed in 1980 by Pakistani cleric Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani, who refers to himself as “the sixth Sultan Ul Faqr,” Gilani, has been directly linked by court documents to Jamaat ul-Fuqra or “community of the impoverished,” an organization that seeks to “purify” Islam through violence.
Though primarily based in Lahore, Pakistan, Jamaat ul-Fuqra has operational headquarters in New York and openly recruits through various social service organizations in the U.S., including the prison system. Members live in hamaats or compounds, such as Islamberg, where they agree to abide by the laws of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, which are considered to be above local, state and federal authority. Additional hamaats have been established in Hyattsville, Maryland; Red House, Virginia; Falls Church, Virginia; Macon, Georgia; York, South Carolina; Dover, Tennessee; Buena Vista, Colorado; Talihina, Oklahoma; Tulane Country, California; Commerce, California; and Onalaska, Washington. Others are being built, including an expansive facility in Sherman, Pennsylvania.

Old NY Post Story: CATSKILLS SITE EYED June 4, 2007 — A remote Muslim commune nestled in the Catskill Mountains has come under the scrutiny of state and federal authorities for possible ties to terrorism, according to law-enforcement sources.
Officials say Islamberg - a wooded, 70-acre encampment in upstate Tompkins, about three hours north of the city - acts as the headquarters for an outfit called Muslims of the Americas, widely believed to be a front for Jamaat al-Fuqra, founded by radical Pakistani cleric Mubarak Ali Gilani.
On Monday, ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson highlighted and seemed to glorify anti-America comments made by a young Egyptian woman, whom the show interviewed as part of a regular series about young people from other countries, who compared the States to a dumb “jock” that in a few years will “die down and burn out, and what’s left is a totally useless nation.”
The young woman, named Ro’ya, charged: “In the past, if the States was a strong country, it was because it had thinkers, but right now, it’s kind of like, it’s kind of like a jock, okay — very powerful, very athletic, in a couple of years, die down and burn out, and what’s left is a totally useless nation.” Without challenge, Weir added: “Ro’ya says she would only live in America if it would help Americans understand the Arab world. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP - Link) — An Iowa Republican congressman on Monday defended his prediction that terrorists would celebrate if Democrat Barack Obama were elected president, despite a rebuke from aides to John McCain, the GOP’s apparent presidential nominee.
“(Obama will) certainly be viewed as a savior for them,” Rep. Steve King told The Associated Press. “That’s why you will see them supporting him, encouraging him.”
King said his offices have been bombarded with calls — positive and negative — since he said Friday that al-Qaida “would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror.”
King cited Obama’s pledge to pull U.S. troops from Iraq, his father’s Muslim roots in Kenya and his middle name, Hussein, which King said has a meaning to terrorists.
Asked about the remarks as he campaigned in Mississippi, Obama said, “I think that Mr. King has it backwards. The fact that the continuation of a presence in Iraq as Senator McCain has suggested is exactly what, I think, will fan the flames of anti-American sentiment and make it more difficult for us to create a long-term and sustainable peace in the world.
“But I have to say that Mr. King and individuals like him thrive on offensive or controversial statements as a way to get in the papers, so I don’t take it too seriously. I would hope Senator McCain would want to distance himself from that kind of inflammatory and offensive remarks,” Obama said.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested at her lodgings at Khartoum’s Unity High School yesterday, accused of insulting the Prophet of Islam.

Reacting to West’s criticism, justice ministry says 19-year-old broke Islamic law by having an affair
RIYADH–Saudi Arabia is defending a court’s decision to sentence a woman who was gang-raped to 200 lashes, saying she was having an extramarital affair in violation of Islamic laws.The case of the 19-year-old Shiite woman who, along with a male companion, was abducted and raped by seven men has drawn international attention. Canada has denounced the “barbaric” sentence and even the United States, a close ally of the conservative kingdom, offered mild criticism.
“The woman in the case is married and has confessed to establishing a relationship in violation of sharia law,” the Saudi Justice Ministry said in a statement yesterday.
It said she and her companion were alone in a dark area outdoors when they were noticed by the men who later raped them.
“We reiterate that judicial rulings in this virtuous country … are based on God’s book and the traditions of his Prophet and that no ruling is issued without being based on evidence,” said the statement carried by official news agency SPA.
Ruling according to Saudi Arabia’s strict reading of Islamic law, a court originally sentenced the woman to 90 lashes for being alone with an unrelated man and the rapists to jail terms of up to five years.
But last week, the Supreme Judicial Council increased her sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison and ordered the rapists to serve two to nine years in jail.
The woman’s husband has told local media they would appeal, even though the judge had warned that the sentence could be increased again if she loses the appeal.
The justice ministry noted that the law gives the right of appeal, but warned that “resorting to the media” could have “a negative effect on the other parties in the case.”
The court dealing with the case revoked the licence of the woman’s lawyer, who has also been summoned by the justice ministry to appear before a disciplinary panel.
In Ottawa, Josée Verner, minister responsible for the status of women, recently said the Conservative government planned to complain to the Saudi government about the “barbaric” sentence that will only further violate the victim.
Human Rights Watch has called on King Abdullah to drop all charges against the woman.
The Saudi legal system is dominated by clerics who adhere to the kingdom’s austere Sunni interpretation of Islamic law.

On September 3, the Islamist website www.ekhlaas.cc, hosted by SiteGenie LLC in Rochester, Minnesota, featured a discussion on ways to attack U.S. military bases. The discussion was accompanied by diagrams of military bases showing various possible plans of attack.

September 4, 2007 — Fear and paranoia are driving the taxi strike planned for tomorrow and Thursday, industry sources said yesterday.The global-positioning systems being installed in all 13,000 cabs will be used to target and spy on Muslims, according to pro-strike literature being distributed by members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, the group behind the two-day walkout.
“This is where deep racial, ethnic and religious prejudices and biases come into play,” one flier reads. “DNA samples are obtained, scrutinized and archived. Personal and family histories are scoured for evidence of ethnic and religious fervor. Clearly, surveillance technology can be a death sentence once you are in its crosshairs.”
Taxi and Limousine Commission officials say the city has no such sinister motives. The GPS will be used to automate the paper trip sheets each driver has to keep, and will transmit only the start and end location of each fare, officials said.
The new technology system, which will also allow for credit-card payments, was approved in 2004 as part of the same deal that gave drivers a 26 percent fare hike.
It’s unclear how many drivers are represented by the Taxi Workers Alliance, which claims 8,000 members - roughly one fifth of the total cabby workforce. But even those who disagree with the group may choose to stay home, sources say, because threats have been made against drivers who pick up passengers rather than strike.
“We are extremely disappointed to hear that that kind of fear mongering is taking place,” TLC spokesman Allan Fromberg said. “No one should be operating in that kind of environment.”

A demonstration has been held in south- east Afghanistan accusing US troops of insulting Islam after they distributed footballs bearing the name of Allah.
The balls showed the Saudi Arabian flag which features the Koranic declaration of faith.
The US military said the idea had been to give something for Afghan children to enjoy and they did not realise it would cause offence.
The footballs were dropped from a helicopter in Khost province.
Some displayed flags from countries all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, which features the shahada, one of the five pillars of Islam - the declaration of faith.
The words, which include the name of Allah, are revered, and Muslims are very sensitive about where and how they can be used.
