Back from the NYC…
Thursday, June 26th, 2008I’m finally home. Only gone a few days but it seems like a week!
Ok I have to get the urge to tell my blog friends about my trip.
Remember before I said that since I have been blogging I have developed this notion of sharing. As I explore and see and do relatively interesting things I think of y’all.
Hmmm where to start, well upon our arrival to Chitown to make our connecting flight to NYC we had a fairly significant airport delay in Chicago. The following is the best example I can give on why taking good meds can and do work.
On a previous vacation to California years ago (pre 9/11) we were held captive not once but twice after being told to board two aircraft which were not ready for flight.
Two cabin door problems on two different airlines on the same day I think not.
This delay was strictly weather related. As you can see in the pic #1 storms were prevalent throughout the Chicago area and also in NY.
We were stuck on the ground for almost two hours. Pissed me off a little because we missed our dinner reservations at the revolving restaurant atop the Marriott.
I took the time to start to read one of my new books (Makers and Takers: Why Conservatives Work Harder, Feel Happier, Have Closer Families, Take Fewer Drugs, Give More Generously, Value Honesty More, Are Less … Even Hug Their Children More Than Liberals by Peter Schweizer) Whew!
I have actually been corresponding with Mr. Schweizer. If you enjoy reading about the rampant hypocrisy in the liberal world I highly recommend this book.
Oh one more thing, keep this a secret but since I purchased my GPS unit while in D.C I was curious to see if the thing would work in the air.
Remember when I told y’all about the GPS I had while in DC not working in the hood just miles from the capital.
Well since we were waiting on the ground for so long I turned it on and it immediately located the position.
As we took off the damm thing tracked perfectly.
137 mph at takeoff, top speed of 597 mph, average speed about 560.
As we took off over Lake Michigan it was funny to see the little car icon go out over the water. I wish I had the driving directions on to hear the little voice say “STOP ASSHOLE YOU ARE GOING INTO THE WATER.” lol!
Yes I’m a big kid what can I say.
The damm thing tracked all the way to New York. So those who are looking to purchase a GPS unit big ups to Garmin, but I still want to know why the damm thing can track at over 500 mph but did not give me directions through the hood!
Upon arrival we met an old friend of Mrs. Snoop who worked for the NY Attorney Generals office years ago as the consumer protection dude for the state.
We ate at a place called “Juniors” across the street from the Marriott which is suppose to be a “New York institution.” Hell, everything there seems to be to New Yorkers. Famous for the cheesecake, but I had my customary burger something I tend to do when nothing else strikes my fancy.
The burger sucked big time and any place that can fuck up a burger…well so much for New York institutions.
Way too many items on the menu, a HUGE red flag, frankly they should only serve desserts.
Afterwards Mrs. Snoop and I walked along with the Times Square Masses. Remember this is a Sunday evening at 10:00 and there were fucken people everywhere.
I’m thinking don’t you people have school or work to go to tomorrow morning!?
As I did the first couple of times visiting NYC I love to walk and explore.
Yes I do the typical tourist gawking at the buildings and lights but I’m looking for photo angles most of the time.
I find my visits here enjoyable and interesting but as I have stated numerous times great place to visit but could never live here, UNLESS I was seriously wealthy.
I will admit that Mrs. Snoop being occupied at her conference gives me a chance to freelance.
Mrs. Snoop likes to have her days and destinations planned out
When I go to various places I like to explore particularly neighborhoods.
Anyone who is familiar with NYC I bet I walked almost every block between lets say 23rd and 57th from Park to 9th.
One thing I can say for the people in NYC is that they take advantage of any green space available. Folks walking, reading books or just power napping is commonplace.
I must also say NYC is still relatively clean. I saw individuals constantly cleaning off sidewalks picking up cigarette butts.
It would help if the people would take the extra time and effort to find one of the numerous trashcans around the city.
I went to the sets of Good Morning America and the Today shows appearing on the screen briefly at both. In fact the extended version of the Today show when Kathy Lee is hosting I staked a spot just over the shoulder to the two ladies.
A jackass security dude must have been told to remove the strategically positioned black dude from the background. I did get lots of airtime, LOL!
I started to take the subway to Yankee Stadium to see the old ballpark before it is demolished at the end of this year, but I was seriously sleep deprived and after my TV appearance I took a brief nap.
Later I checked out the taping of this Bravo series Sheer Genius at show staring Jacqueline Smith from original Charlies Angels series. Man she has to be in her 60’s and is still gorgeous.
They did the taping in the little island in Times Square where the military recruiting station is.
You may remember, this is the place where some dude on a bicycle left a small bomb that damaged the door several months ago. NYC police officers keep two people nearby at all times day and night now.
Anyone who approaches is seriously glared at.
Oh I forgot, the day before I missed a stabbing in Times Square right next to the Viacom building where they tape some MTV afternoon show. I was hanging out in front of the hotel early in the morning just chilling before I went to the GMA set. As I went to the GMA studio a good size crowd gathers to get a view of the show.
As I crossed the street some dude was lying against a pole right under the feet of the GMA spectators. Nobody was paying attention to him. Finally an officer attended to the dude. Several ambulances and police vehicles came on scene.
I was wondering at the time why there were so many police cars for one guy.
Later after walking around I came to the Viacom building where there was police crime scene tape surrounding what looked like a bunch of trash which included an uneaten Mac Donald’s sandwich.
I chatted up a police officer and he said that a guy was stabbed earlier in the morning at around 8:00 where I had just passed earlier.
I’m not sure if the guy I saw was the one who got stabbed. My guess is he was stabbed in that area and walked towards the crowd to get help.
Knifing is the crime of choice in NYC because every newscast has someone being stabbed all over the damm place.
As I finished chatting with the officer another spectator crowd started to gather in front of the Viacom building. I chatted up another individual, this time a street food vendor and he informed me that every Monday and Tuesday afternoon some famous musician or actor comes for a visit to participate in some show that airs live in the afternoons.
This day Cedric the Entertainer was the famous guest.
I did not have my camera ready for his arrival so I missed that photo op.
Mrs. Snoop talks about our less than eventful and VERY disappointing visit to Ground Zero.
It is just another construction site. Barriers were up, chain link fences and barricades are on all 4 sides, there are boards to prevent gawking, and covered side walks. The crowd of pedestrians stream by without even a glance towards the giant hole in the ground. That may be because you can’t see anything, even if you try/want.
Seven years later, there isn’t a plaque; there is no viewing area, no concrete pad, nothing to commemorate or acknowledge a pivotal turning point in our country’s history; the day when everything in the US changed, forever. No one seems to remember or care that the 9-11 site is still not healed.
There is a little nearby chapel, St. Paul’s that has some commemoration. They have a small gift shop and displays of pictures and outpourings captured from the days following the event. There is a new tree planted in place of the 100 year old spruce that was destroyed that day but saved the church was moving. But the city of NYC and its denizens have apparently moved on – without catering to tourists like us.
We paid $20 in cab fare to get from north of Times Square to the World Trade Center area, and could not believe that there has been so little progress in re-building and that the mayor/governor has not provided any kind of monument (even temporary) that marked the site or allowed part of it to be viewed. That was a big disappointment, to us and to the other Kansans traveling with us. The red tape and politicians must have created a grid lock of insensitivity. It was an event that moved and changed all of us, in a moment’s time. To not have a place or way to pay our respects was upsetting and idiotic. The citizens of NYC may have gotten used to the two towers being gone, but the rest of the country’s citizens do not live next door. We wanted to see the spot, see the work being done to replace the twin towers, and pay tribute to those who lived thru the event and who and died that day. We did not expect much. But we expected something.
Afterwards I read numerous stories about fraud and bureaucracy:
- WTC Painter Sentenced for 9/11 Fraud
- Port Authority: Take My Freedom Tower … Please!
- Work at Ground Zero Site Is Behind Schedule
- WTC Delaywire
I wish I had read these stories before bothering to visit the area. This is a fucken joke. The Mayor, the Governor and every other elected official in New York City and State should be ashamed at the colossal mismanagement and bureaucratic incompetence of getting this site completed.
No wonder the site is not visible to visitors; the damm city is embarrassed by the lack of progress.
Well not letting disappointment of the WTC site damper our visit. I attended my second Broadway show, this time Hairspray.
Mrs. Snoop highlights:
I may not remember anything I heard in the many legal sessions I attended, but I will not ever forget the one play we got to see. The convention organizers arranged for “cheap” tickets to a Broadway show. Cheapskate that I normally am, I gratefully paid $50 + tax to see “Hairspray.”
The seats were almost at the back of the Richard Rogers theater on 52nd street, and we were crammed into seats built for much smaller people. The old style theater rococo décor was marred by banks of klieg lights. The sound system could not make up for walls that echo and blur the music. But the show was marvelous.
[For those who are not familiar with this show, or who have not seen the John Travolta version – I haven’t – the “Cliff note” version is this: Chunky but spunky teenage girl living in 1962 Baltimore, achieves the impossible by getting a role on a local TV dance show, having the heart-throb guy to fall out of love with the campus queen and in love with her (despite her girth), and - because she loves Negroes and their music and despite a brief stint in the local lock-up because of a protest march - succeeds in integrating the TV show. Good triumphs over evil, her best friend goes from a gawky geek in glasses to the hot chick with a black boyfriend, and the evil blonde mom who once was “Ms Baltimore crab” and her equally shallow daughter are finally foiled in every way.]
The sets, songs, costumes, performers and story were all well worth the $120 and the discomfort of having a stranger’s thigh up against mine for 2 hours. Even those who aren’t usually keen on musicals or theater should make a point of seeing at least one Broadway show if ever they get the chance. NYC Theater is world famous for good reason. No matter how great a local community theater is, or how much the touring group emulates the NY show, there is nothing like seeing live theater in New York. It is a thrill to see live entertainment of this caliber, in the place it was designed to please. The pleasure of watching the best doing their best is without parallel. It always leaves me in tears, wishing that when I was young I’d have had the nerve (and encouragement) to try for the dream.
For those who don’t like theater, give Broadway one chance to change your mind. For those who do, this place is Mecca! I wish I had the time and money to stay a month, and attend shows every day! For those who live in NYC and may be reading this post, please tell me/us how to get cheap tickets! We really would love to see more Broadway (and off-Broadway) shows, if we ever get back to the “Big Apple.” Meanwhile, to all the cast and crew of “Hairspray,” you were wonderful and I envy all of you!
Nice trip overall, would like to go back soon to see another show and enjoy another great restaurant.
One problem that I heard on the news as we were leaving is that NYC taxis are raising their fairs as much as 50%, in the coming months of course over gas prices.
So if you go, wear comfy shoes to go to your destination.
I never mind walking in NYC there is just so much to see so why waste that time on some tour bus or taxi.
