In case you did not catch O’Reilly last night (Monday 3/31) he had a discussion with Marc Lamont Hill. Mr. Hill is an Afro studies dude teaching at Temple.

Just an FYI, below is a portion of an article written by Mr. Hill and it shows just how liberal he is, even accusing Obama of being a centrist. He really means he is too closely aligned with whitey!
First let me say, I don’t agree with a lot of what dude says but I think dude is one of the best black guests on talking head TV in explaining his side of a given argument. He speaks fast, but dude is clear and concise and brings an intellectual analysis to any discussion. There are a lot of other liberal Negros on the tube but I rarely listen to them. Most are embarrassingly inarticulate and almost all end up resorting to the typical Negrodom talking points. Mr. Hill does that too, but he hides it well in his explanations and analysis.
Anywho, during this discussion Mr. Hill is explaining to O’Reilly why Nigga Wright received such a warm reception at this Catholic Church on Sunday. Dude has explained this to O’Reilly on numerous occasions and either O’Reilly is a complete dolt or is willfully ignorant.
Folks this is not complicated. Think back to the O.J. verdict. I still remember the day. I was in my office with a co-worker and at the exact moment when that bailiff chick (who butchered OJ’s name) said “not-guilty” I felt slightly sick. I became even more ill as I watched a room full of Negro students break out in raucous applause - as if they had won the lottery or gotten their
reparations check. This is no lie, for the first time in my life I was actually embarrassed to be a black individual. I was ashamed and appalled that Negros were celebrating the acquittal of that murderous bastard.
Now after that initial emotion, I really began to think about it. In time, I realized that black people were not cheering for O.J.’s acquittal. Rather, it was a symbolic victory for all of black America. His innocence or guilt was totally irrelevant. A black man was able to “beat the white man at their own game.”
Now I know some of you folks have heard this already, but white people today still can’t figure out why black folks react the way they do towards people like Jeremiah Wright or some other guilty or ignorant ass Negro fuck. The people in the O’Reilly/Hill discussion video of Wright were not applauding for Wright. They were applauding the fact that he got hit by white America’s best shot and he still survived.
High profile Negro politicians/criminals do crazy shit all the time and get busted for being the corrupt fucks they were born to be. But surviving the “wrath of whitey” is a very important symbolic accomplishment to the average Negro on the streets. A Negro individual’s misdeeds, corruption, guilt and being able to AGAIN “survive the wrath
of whitey.” That kind of thing s a badge of honor in the black community, particularly amongst the intellectually clueless and retarded Negros.
You see it tis a bit different now since we have You Tube and camera cell phones. Black folks use to be able to rally around each other IN PRIVATE without the prying eyes of whitey scrutinizing every thing that was said from the pulpit.
So now whitey television news executive is able to watch a You Tube clip of someone like that hopelessly retarded Pastor Manning. And the white man says “oh shit we have got to get that guy on TV to show white America just how ignorant some of these Negros are!”
You can’t analyze the typical Negro reaction to that situation in a logical manner. Why not? Because more then just the facts are at play. You also have decades, if not centuries, of being told (or knowing) that a lot of white people are “out to get us.” So any victory over white rule, no matter how small or retarded, is going to get celebrated by a lot of the “downtrodden.” So remember - there are a good number of black folks who are equally as appalled by J Wright’s crap but can’t say shit unless they want to be seen as with whitey instead of with their own people.
My point is Negros who are allowed by whitey to appear on these shows must abide by liberal Negro rule of discussion. Remember now, Mr. Hill. He is an Afro studies dude. If he were to speak candidly and truthfully about how
retarded J. Wright’s comments were he would lose his job and he damm sure would not be the chosen token Negro guest on TV. So what do you think he’s going to say? He’ll say what whitey expects an apologist to say.
Mr. Hill and all Negro talking heads play by the same rules. Say what is expected. Or be quiet. Even conservative leaning Negros who are given camera time, like Larry Elder, must be very careful about what is said – in order to be acceptable on white network television.
This is why blogging is so refreshing. I will never be invited to speak on TV or radio - although I did call into a local radio show a few days ago. I was immediately cut off when I said that “white people who plan to vote for Obama based on some sort of white guilt are being silly and intellectually dishonest and if they think that by voting for Obama will turn around race relations in the nation they are retards…………” CLICK!
The truth is a bitch. People say they want to hear the truth, but they don’t. Not really. They want to hear what they expect to hear – people agreeing with them or fitting into pre-conceived stereo-types.
But anyone who wants to hear a Black conservative’s real thoughts is hereby invited to pay me to appear on camera. I’m not shy. I can’t talk as fast as Mr. Hill. But I bet I could hold my own with him!

Although he opposes the war in Iraq, Obama refuses to vote against its funding.
While Obama supports health care for all Americans, he does not embrace a universal single-payer system that would effectively undermine private corporate interests. At the same time that he bemoans the loss of jobs and expansion of global poverty, Obama fails to denounce free trade agreements and extols the virtues economic globalization. In addition, Obama has been conspicuously silent on topics such as the prison industrial complex, the Zionist occupation of Palestine, and the economic underdevelopment of Africa.
In the face of a black electorate that still craves messianic leadership, Obama has skillfully positioned himself as the Martin Luther King of his generation. Unlike King, however, Obama does not aim to disrupt the fundamental structure of society. Rather than dismantling the triple threat of global racism, poverty, and militarism that King warned against, Obama has promoted a doctrine of compromise that is self-serving rather than strategic, milquetoast rather than pragmatic.

Folks, let me clue you in on something many of you may already know. Loudmouth Negros like Rev. J. Wright are the biggest fucken hypocrites on the planet.
The vast majority of black ministers across this nation preach about “community and political” unity, evil rich white people, white greed, out of control materialism from pulpits in the hood, while living in completely different worlds.
Quick story, I was involved in a community issue where illegal dumping was taking place in a predominantly black and poor area of a town I previously lived in.
I called media attention to this issue and met with a number of black ministers to come up with solutions.
One of the worst dump sites was right in front of the home of a 70 plus year old black lady. I asked her if the city or county officials have ever come and looked at this. She said she called the city numerous times but nobody ever bothered to come and inspect.
One of the local TV stations did an interview with me on the subject and the opening video was the reporter speaking behind a trash pile that was taller than he was. You initially could not see the house until the camera panned out.
Some of this trash was SEVERAL YEARS OLD. Some of the trash was so old that I was going to set up a research project with the local university to carbon date the trash.
This dump site was directly behind one of the most prominent black churches in the city. I went and spoke to the pastor and asked if he know about it. He gave me some bullshit answer and finally acknowledged that he did not even live in the hood, or even the city.
Dude lived in a high dollar gated community 30 minutes outside town.
I went to every black minister in the city and asked if they would assist in helping to fund the cleanup and I wanted to raise money to provide a financial reward to people who helped police catch the people dumping the crap in the poorer neighborhoods.
Initially only one pastor agreed to help solve the problem and even focused a portion of his sermon addressing the problem.
I finally got some token support after these Negro fucks saw me on TV and in news articles they were like “Ooooo we care” after I said to a reporter that I was “disappointed in the response of the black churches in the area.”
I was involved in a number of community issues and almost ever damm time I sought help from BLACK ministers none of these mutherfuckers would do jack. They were only concerned with what was going on with their own little circle of church folks.
These fucks did not care about “the community.”
Most of these black pastors that I have come in contact with are a bunch of self absorbed egotistical fucks who act as if they were goddamm community royalty.
Once they vacate the pulpit and the collection plates have been circulated they leave the issues of the community, in the community while they trek back to the very whiteyville they ranted about on Sundays.
Every show of community “kindness” exhibited by these black ministers is only done for show and to highlight the perceived “good will” of that (individual) church.
It’s not about improving or helping black folks or the community, it’s about “see I care about my fellow Negros” and see OUR church is here to “serve the community.” If the community “kindness” is not sanctioned by a particular church nobody gives a fuck.
Most pastors and in particular the more inflammatory Negros like Rev J. Wright are total frauds. These ministers don’t want to be around any poor, uneducated, Negros any more that the “typical” white folks Obama talks about. Their ranting is a fucken act brilliantly performed to stir up a weekly captive ignorant Negro audience to increase attendance and to keep the collection plates full. Who am I kidding, Shit now they suck the collection right out of peoples bank accounts.
Little Negro tidbit for you white folks; Black folks like the collection plate parade thingy because it gives folks a chance to show how much MORE support their pastor when they (publicly) pluck down more dead presidents than that other heathen.
Folks I’m a Christian and I don’t have any real beef with folks who attend church on a regular basis, but far too many of these fraud Negro churches are only about getting that dollar. If they happen to save a few souls, cool. The black church use to be about solving community issues and was a pillar of strength and stability in the black community. Rev J. Wright and these high dollar ministers are no fools tho.
Barking out a few “thank you Jesus!” sprinkling in a few bible passages and some political rhetoric can be a very rewarding career choice.

Folks I’m not a statistician, I can’t give you all of the facts on the issue of more Negros being in jail then in college, but as far as I’m concerned I don’t give a fuck about the stark numbers. Just go to jail – any jail – and count the brown faces as compared to the white. Now go to a school – any school – and do the same. Then you figure it out.
Either way, I don’t think we have enough prisons.
Now I’m not some dude wanting petty thieves or casual weed smokers locked up for eternity. Quite the contrary actually. For that type of thing, I favor retribution that fits the crime. Make the thief work to pay back what was taken, 10 fold. And make the drug user work to rehabilitate people negatively impacted by such uses.

I think I wrote something about this way back when, and I am too lazy to look it up, but I have always thought that the notion of there being more Negros in prison than in college was not even slightly logical.
Quick Google University Research shows that back in 2000 it was said that there were an estimated 791,600 African American men in prison and jail, and 603,000 in higher education. That’s about a 191,000 difference.
However I believe that the Justice Policy Institute’s estimate of the number of African American men in college is too low. According to the Census Bureau, there were an estimated 804,000 African-American men in college in 2000.
Via Google University research, I found that one dude tracked down the respective figures for those age groups and found that for African American men 18-24, there were 480,000 in college and 180,000 in prison or jail. So, depending upon which statistics you rely upon from 2000, there were (barely) more black men in jail or prison then in college. There may have even been more in college then jail.
So here’s what I think - a young black male is, in fact, two-and-a-half times as likely to be in college then he is to be in prison or jail.
Those numbers are even more impressive when all Negroes of any gender are included. Murray notes that there were 747,000 African American women 18-24 in college as opposed to only 9,000 in prison or jail in 2000. So, in total, there
were 1,216,000 young African Americans in college compared to 189,000 in jail or prison.
Y’all can look it up and find out the real numbers if you wish, but like I said, I don’t particularly care about statistics. What matters to me most are individuals.
There is this thing called free will. And we all have it. Even and especially my fellow black citizens.
If you CHOOSE to be an uneducated, freeloading, gubment parasite that will all but guarantee your place at the ass end of the social and economic ladder why should I be concerned that there are prison cells available for occupancy?

Tremendous advances have been made in crime reduction in the African American community . . . which should not be hidden by presentation of statistics that, however well intentioned, show that community in a negative light. Any time you read or hear something about the uneven number of blacks in jail versus school, be skeptical. Those numbers support a political agenda that would keep Blacks in the victim role that so many liberals use to support their power base.

My daughter, now 20, had 1 child with a complete waste of human flesh. She is now pregnant with her second child apparently with another less than desirable individual.
Don’t get me wrong, my baby (she will always be my baby) is beautiful, smart (shit loads smarter than I am) with endless talents. However, by not listening to her daddy or anyone else with more common sense, she STILL does not have even her GED, is on some sort of social aid, struggling and unless she CHOOSES to move, finish her education, and seek a better quality of friends and acquaintances she will be at that ass end of the social and economic ladder.
She was not fucked by Republican right wing evil and greed. George Wallace was not blocking the doors of any school she attempted to attend, nor were any racist white people chanting “Negros go back to Africa.” She was raised
in a two parent household until her teens. My former wife and I had a decent marriage for most of our 14 years. There were other factors that caused our divorce. But it was not due to our hatred of each other. We still get along great. In fact, last Thanksgiving, the ex wife and her boyfriend (a nice man) came to our house for a big family feast. So my daughter cannot blame her bad choices upon the family drifting apart! Society did not make her choose the path she is taking (which is leading no where good). She did that all on her own! And I still have hope she’ll turn around one day.

Because of the controversy surrounding Rev J. Wright I have heard a number of TV pundits scoff at how silent the black community is regarding his idiot racist crap. But I understand it. Speaking out can socially isolate you and in many case could lead to serious ramifications in the black community.
For me, I don’t hang out nor live around any crazy, tard Negros. I’m just some ranting darkie who lives in Middle America minding my own business, no political pull or social impact or bully pulpit.

What possesses a woman who is highly educated, at one of the top schools in this nation, making nearly a quarter of a million a year, privy to all that is good with this country, get up on stage, look people in the eye and say; “for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country.”
I just don’t understand how most of these Democrats can look themselves in the mirror after they regurgitate the mounds of empty rhetoric and anti-American bullshit in their quest to manipulate people into believing that their never ending bitching and moaning is what folks look for in selecting their next president.
Fuck it pisses me off that McCain is the nominee, it just makes me sick, however if I am running his campaign, I run ads all across this country using Michelle Obama’s own words against her and Obama’s campaign.
Between idiot jackasses like Charles Barkley and now this cow, Obama’s presidency will not be torpedoed by what he says, but what his idiot supporters and fans say.

The campaign’s other most potent form of currency remains its thick deck of race cards. This was all too apparent in the Hallmark show. In its carefully calibrated cross section of geographically and demographically diverse cast members — young, old, one gay man, one vet, two union members — African-Americans were reduced to also-rans. One black woman, the former TV correspondent Carole Simpson, was given the servile role of the meeting’s nominal moderator, Ed McMahon to Mrs. Clinton’s top banana. Scattered black faces could be seen in the audience. But in the entire televised hour, there was not a single African-American questioner, whether to toss a softball or ask about the Clintons’ own recent misadventures in racial politics.
The Clinton camp does not leave such matters to chance. This decision was a cold, political cost-benefit calculus. In October, seven months after the two candidates’ dueling church perorations in Selma, USA Today found Hillary Clinton leading Mr. Obama among African-American Democrats by a margin of 62 percent to 34 percent. But once black voters met Mr. Obama and started to gravitate toward him, Bill Clinton and the campaign’s other surrogates stopped caring about what African-Americans thought. In an effort to scare off white voters, Mr. Obama was ghettoized as a cocaine user (by the chief Clinton strategist, Mark Penn, among others), “the black candidate” (as Clinton strategists told the Associated Press) and Jesse Jackson redux (by Mr. Clinton himself).
The result? Black America has largely deserted the Clintons. In her California primary victory, Mrs. Clinton drew only 19 percent of the black vote. The campaign saw this coming and so saw no percentage in bestowing precious minutes of prime-time television on African-American queries.
Today’s birds of a feather entry: Race-hustler Maxine Waters is set to endorse Hillary Clinton in a conference call today. Maybe Hill will put a little Selma-style flavor in her voice today to celebrate. I came to know and loathe Waters when I lived and worked in Los Angeles. Bill Clinton dozed off at the Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem just as his wife was receiving the endorsement (or, more properly, the blessing) of Calvin Butts at Abyssinian Baptist Church, eight or so blocks away. This church had been the pulpit of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. — “Mr. Jesus” to his congregation, member of Congress and husband to the politically fearless lefty (just one instance: as a witness before the House Un-American Activities Committees) and staggeringly sexual songstress of my youth, Hazel Scott, like Lena Horne. A randy fellow. I don’t think that black preachers have the sway they once had. Or white ministers, for that matter, except for those who are evangelicals and fundamentalists operating out of humongous mall churches.But back to the black ministers and their diminished sway. The decline of preacher power is a coming of age of the African-American population, much as it is among Irish and Italian Catholics or Jews or, for a demographically near-fatal shift, mainstream Protestants, who mostly and at best think their ministers are irrelevant. The black clerisy cannot any longer instruct its parishoners about their voting. It is an irony, of course, that the Harlem pastorate’s last swing at real political influence over their congregations is for a white woman and against a black man. Yet it also emphasizes their reactionary cast. No one since Martin Luther King has anyone so inspired and energized young whites as Barack Obama. This, then, is a real cross-racial alliance built on the cultural and educational achievements of African-Americans and on the true openness of whites and Asians to their black brothers and sisters. The bond between every Calvin Butts in America and Hillary is the old fix, pliant for the former, patronizing for the latter. And, as for the latter and her husband, it is also ugly. An article in this morning’s Financial Times by Edward Luce and Stephanie Kirchgaessner makes clear how perilous this is for the Clintons — and for the Democrats, in general. The most significant trap is that Bill risks making himself the prime issue of his wife’s campaign, two nasty and unimaginably calculating folk baying at Barack Obama whom almost everyone finds gracious. Me too.
There is a calculus to the Clintons trying to make Obama run as the black candidate. It is to stir up fear in one part of Hillary’s constituency, white women and particularly older white women. The other goal for Hillary is to turn Obama into a taunt for Hispanic Americans. After all, there was not one significant black figure in the Clinton administration, except on what you’d have to call the black reservations like Housing. Yes, there was the supreme fixer outside the administration, probably because he couldn’t get confirmed for anything or no plausible appointment was high enough for him, Vernon Jordan. The Clintons did not offend Hispanic Americans, not at all. For instance, they made Bill Richardson U.N. ambassador.
One of the largely unexamined frontiers in American politics is the one between African-Americans and Hispanic Americans, and it is at best a frosty frontier. There are more voting Latinos than there are voting blacks in the electorate, and probably more in the larger states that are soon to have primaries. Like New York and California on Super Tuesday. Watch for malicious mischief.

Even though Barack Obama may become the first African-American ever to represent a major party as the nominee for president, many black lawmakers on Capitol Hill are not supporting him. And that’s creating tensions within the Congressional Black Caucus.More than a third of the black members of Congress are backing Hillary Rodham Clinton or John Edwards in the presidential primary, a stance that puts them at odds with many of their African-American constituents, who, recent polls show, are beginning to shift to Obama’s camp.The Clinton supporters — among them, civil rights pioneer Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) — have said their endorsements didn’t hinge on race. Instead, they cited long-standing relationships with the Clintons, a respect for Hillary Clinton’s experience in national politics and, for some, geographical alliances with her in New York.
But now that Obama has won the Iowa caucuses and appears poised to do well in other early-primary states, some African-American lawmakers are pointing to the Clinton backers and calling them political opportunists who did not believe in the electability of a black candidate.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Robert L. Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, who is campaigning today in South Carolina with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, just made a suggestion that raised the specter of Barack Obama’s past drug use. He also compared Mr. Obama to Sidney Poitier, the black actor, in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”At a rally here for Mrs. Clinton at Columbia College, Mr. Johnson was defending recent comments that Mrs. Clinton made regarding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She did not mean to take any credit away from him, Mr. Johnson said, when she said that it took President Johnson to sign the civil rights legislation he fought for.Dr. King had led a “moral crusade,” Mr. Johnson said, but such crusades have to be “written into law.”
“That is the way the legislative process works in this nation and that takes political leadership,” he said. “That’s all Hillary was saying.”
He then added: “And to me, as an African-American, I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood – and I won’t say what he was doing, but he said it in the book – when they have been involved.”
Moments later, he added: “That kind of campaign behavior does not resonate with me, for a guy who says, ‘I want to be a reasonable, likable, Sidney Poitier ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.’ And I’m thinking, I’m thinking to myself, this ain’t a movie, Sidney. This is real life.”
Gee, yet another Clinton hireling attacking Mr. Obama for his drug use and/or dealing.

Still, why doesn’t Obama just explain how he “didn’t inhale” and put it all behind him?

Folks let me tell you, although I’m not a Democrat and have no intention on voting for either of these people Hillary fucked up. Black folks even ones who may not have voted for Obama will turn on her racist ass in a heartbeat. Black folks are not going to allow a white politician, even the Clintons, to drag another black man on the back of the figurative pick-up truck.
The Democrat Party is in serious trouble on this issue, all of these years the Democrats have bitched and moaned and distorted the fact that it was the Republicans who were the primary arbiters of racist and bigoted politics.
Hillary wants to be president badly, and like Dick Morris said she is not beyond destroying Obama on race issues to capture the White House.

Folks, although you may not like it, and you might get pissed, but I’m gonna keep saying it until I end this blog or assume room temperature (dittohead reference).
Black men in general are the most feared reviled peeps on the planet.
From the images of the riots in the 60’s, the black power salutes, the rap and hip hop culture, black dudes peeping and seeking white women, high incarceration rates, negative media stereotypes you name it, white folks, in particular white men, I don’t give a shit if they are liberal or progressive whatever. White people are not going to give the keys to the White House to a black man, period.
I will also say again the I don’t think it specifically “racism” that will keep Negros out of the Oval office, but the reluctance of white folks to hand over the reigns as the symbolic leader of this nation and have a black face be that symbolic leader is something that just won’t happen.
Do the math people, there are only 33 million or so Negros in this country, less than 10 percent of them give a shit about politics, you can’t win the presidency without winning the white male vote and that is equally split between Democrats and Republicans or better said left leaning and right leaning types.
There are roughly 150 million folks paying attention to this political stuff, the vast majority being white folks.
Question for you, what percentage of these 150 million people do you think have a significant and positive black presence in their lives. What I mean is a long time black friend that they love and respect. A black business partner, a respected colleague, a significant role model, a teacher, professor, mentor. A known respected neighbor, co-worker, spiritual partner or religious buddy, husband or wife.
Wanna know my answer, not counting my 2 brothers, eight (8).
I’m not counting acquaintances, or the black folks I know in passing or see once in awhile and I don’t even see or speak to these (8) on a regular basis.
You simply are not going go into a voting booth and turn over the future of this country (if you indeed give a shit about this sort of thing) to someone of a different race when you truly do not know him nor can relate to him on a basic human level.
Some Democrats are crying foul or fraud because of the poling and the eventual results with Hillary becoming victorious.
But basic common sense reality needs to become apparent with some of you folks.
Obamamania is manufactured and therefore will be short lived.
There is no difference between Obama and Hillary politically whatsoever. Obama is by far a much smarter individual and a far more engaging and personable individual.
Hillary is not even in his league intelligence wise and if Obama were white there would be no contest between he and Mrs. Bill.

White voters tell pollsters they’re color-blind when it comes to race. But when they step into the privacy of the voting booth, it’s a whole different story. LOS ANGELES–Supporters of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama can brush aside many of the criticisms against him. Obama, after all, is a telegenic, articulate campaigner, a top fund-raiser and a centrist Democrat in good stead with party regulars. Is he too wet behind the ears, too green on the issues to win the presidency? Six years ago the same was said about the current occupant of the White House. The issue of Obama’s race, however, isn’t so easily glossed over.
The dangling question that Obama must wrestle with is: Will white voters, and that includes Democrats as well as moderate to conservative independents, vote for a black presidential candidate? The answer is very much up in the air.
Obama did a fairly good job getting white Democratic and independent support in his Illinois Senate victory. But this was not a fair test. His opponent, a lightly regarded, fill-in outsider, Alan Keyes, also was an African-American. Many Republican loyalists in the state were no-shows on Election Day. The chance that they’d cross over and vote for favorite son Obama as a presidential contender is virtually nil.
Still, many white voters, when publicly questioned if they would vote for a black candidate, swear that race makes no difference in their pick. But it’s often a different story when the voting curtain closes and there are no prying pollsters’ eyes or reporters’ microphones and note pads around. In a 2006 study in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, a Yale political economist found that white Republicans are 25 percentage points more likely to cross over and vote for the Democratic senatorial candidate when the GOP candidate is black.
If Obama had been white and faced Keyes or any other black GOP candidate in his Illinois Senate bid, thousands of white Republicans would have defied their party and crossed over to vote for him. The study also found that from 1982 to 2000, when the GOP candidate was black, the majority of white independent voters backed the white candidate.
Republicans and independents weren’t the only ones who exhibited such behavior. Many Democrats did it, too. In House races, the study found that Democrats were nearly 40 percent less likely to vote Democratic if their party’s candidate was black.
Doug Wilder discovered that the hard way when he made a bid to be the first black governor of Virginia in 1989. Four years earlier, he got substantial white vote support in his successful run for lieutenant governor. But the governor’s race was a different story. Polls gave Wilder a near-landslide victory. But that was based on what white voters told pollsters. On election night, Wilder barely squeaked out a win. Many white voters who professed their color-blindness toward Wilder jumped ship in the voting booth.
How much has changed in the nearly two decades since? The Nov. 7 mid-term election may be telling. There are a slew of black Democratic and Republican candidates running for governor and for the Senate in several key swing states. They face white opponents and can’t win without substantial white support. Most of the candidates are well-known, top flight, seasoned office holders — as well as one high-profile sports icon — and are backed to the hilt by their parties. In a few cases, they hold substantial leads over their white opponents. Yet, none are considered shoo-ins.
The issue of race would be dicier for Obama in a presidential jaunt. He would have to unhinge one or two of the Southern or border states away from the GOP. The solid South — that is, the South that is mostly white, conservative, male, pro-war and anti-big government — vehemently opposes any political tilt to minorities and is heavily influenced by ultra-conservative Bible Belt fundamentalism.
Obama is not an outspoken foe of Bush on the Iraq war, terrorism and domestic policies, and has even made some soundings about the need to court evangelicals. But the Southern strategy was the ace in the hole for GOP presidents Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. In 2008, the GOP will do everything it can to make sure that conservative white males don’t defect from the party. If Obama is the Democrat’s man in 2008, the GOP may find the temptation almost too irresistible not to flip the race card against him.
Many white voters can and will vote for Obama if they feel he has the presidential right stuff. But many still can’t or won’t step past his color. That tormenting fact still makes race the X factor that Obama and the Democrats must carefully consider in 2008.
The US state of New Jersey is to weigh apologizing for its role in the slave trade, under a bill to be considered by lawmakers Thursday, more than 200 years after the state abolished the practice.If approved, the bill would make New Jersey the fifth US state to issue such an apology but the first among the northern anti-slavery states that formed the Union side in the US civil war from 1861-1865.
The text of the bill “expresses New Jersey’s profound regret for its role in slavery and apologizes for wrongs inflicted by slavery and its after effects in the United States.”
The “slave states” of Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia apologized last year for their slave-trading past. Maryland, however, fought on the northern side in the war.
New Jersey became the last northern state to abolish slavery in 1804, but the gradual law meant that the practice was not completely eradicated there until 1846, while slavery was not officially abolished nationwide until 1865.
Former (Black) president Bill Clinton expressed his “regrets” over the US role in the slave trade and President George W. Bush described it as “one of the greatest crimes of history,” but there has never been an official US government apology.
