Barack Obama: “You idiot Americans need to Learn Spanish!”
Dude is just flat out saying that Americans are an embarrassment and are a bunch of dumbasses because you morons only know one language.
Obama is also now telling you that Spanish will be the official language of the United States. Your kids better learn it to be able to live and work here.

English is the Trade Language - back in the middle ages, that was Latin.
If you wanted to trade in other countries - you learned to speak Latin, because it was the best language at the time for business and the church virtually assured that you would be able to find SOMEONE who could speak it to some degree.
Dude either doesn’t his history, or thinks so little of the US as to deny or place IN history.
…but then, that’s kind of obvious, isn’t it?
Let him try ordering food in English while in Paris, and see how ‘accomodating’ the Europeans are…

Is that what he said? Really? Are you sure he didn’t say that our kids would be at an advantage in today’s global economy if they learned a second language? I agree that his choice of Spanish an example was not good, since anything having to do with our southern neighbors is such an immediate red flag for right wingers. He could just as easily have used German, Japanese, Chinese, French, or Swahili. I have e-mailed his campaign suggesting that next time he refrain from mentioning Spanish. He should have known better. Really.

I’m a teacher. It’s fine for kids to learn another language, but dang I have trouble teaching them the BASIC subjects! No Child Left Behind and its mandatory testing regime don’t leave much time for anything else! We’re ALWAYS talking about the TEST!

Basically dude is correct that we should be getting our kids to learn other languages.
My brilliant granddaughter can already say the alphabet in and can count in I think 3 or 4 languages already because her parents emphasize her learning all kinds of stuff.
My problem with what Obama said is number one that bastard doesn’t know fucken Spanish himself, and he was not emphasizing learning another language as a benefit to our children he was mocking Americans and pandering to Mexicans.
This is one basic reason why I can’t stand his pandering retarded ass.
He is such a gargantuan phony. I don’t know bout y’all but I find it really uncomfortable and offensive that a dude would run for president while at the same time has no problem bashing this nation.

He’s embarrassed by Americans (which sounds like his wife having never been proud of her country before her husband’s political success) - and face it, he always has been, and he’s teaching his children to be embarrassed by Americans too
- just what you’d expect after 20 years of nodding and smiling from the pews at Trinity…
Oh, and - Really - Europeans speak English?

Snoop: Exactly. Nothing wrong with knowing another language. But it takes some doing - in fact I believe it takes immersion into an environment where that language is used solely - to become very fluent.
Our daughter has been taking Spanish lessons since she was in 8th grade - because she wanted to, not because she was dictated to. She is now a college junior, so that’s 7 years of vocabulary and grammar and phonetics. (Her major is not Spanish, but she decided to continue with it on the side since she had gone fairly far in high school.) She’s still shy about speaking it because she hasn’t had that immersion experience. I suppose that may not be too hard to get in California these days, though.
Fluency in another language is not the point, however. Obama entirely misses the reason for adopting a national language - and that is embracing a sorely needed national identity. It’s ok to have your own cultural heritage and be proud of it, but as Americans shouldn’t we also embrace America’s cultural heritage? Having a national language, like having a standard currency, makes things more coherent and efficient. Furthermore, it cuts the cost of paperwork and staffing immensely to adhere to one language. People should be left to themselves to adapt without government intervention. They adjust much faster with necessity breathing down their necks than with government-provided training wheels.
