Renaming The Tombs for Kerik bad move for Rudy Giuliani
The car takes the right off Centre St., comes to a stop beneath the pedestrian walkway connecting one building of The Tombs to the other. The correction officer behind the wheel rolls down her window, and as soon as you tell her you are from the newspaper, before you can even ask a question, she says, “Kerik, right?”"Where was his name?”
Now she points a finger toward the walkway above her.
“Right up there,” she says. “Been gone more than a year.”
There are two signs up there now, one on each outside wall, both reading the same way: “Manhattan Detention Complex.” It is one of the most famous jailhouses anywhere, and there was a time when its official name wasn’t grand enough for Rudy Giuliani, back when he was the hero mayor of New York and his police commissioner - the one indicted on 16 counts the other day - had to be a hero, too.
That is why Giuliani renamed The Tombs after Bernie Kerik in December 2001. Six years later, that is more interesting than ever, a jail being named after Kerik, just because one of these days he could end up inside one.
A sidebar……. let me say as a Republican, we are fucked. Now I’m not conceding anything to Democrats for 2008 because Hillary is floundering, Edwards can’t be trusted, Obama…well his name is Obama, dude is black, a presidential campaign death sentence,
(Oh wipe that shocked look off your face! You know I’m telling the truth, as I have said from the first day of his candidacy I’m just the only person with the ballz to be honest about it.)
Anywho, Republicans, being fucked, Rudy as the campaign wears on will have way too many skeletons both personal and professional to garner support.
The talk at Blogworld was that the Thompson campaign is dead in the water. Yes you heard me correctly; the universal phrase I heard over and over was that Thompson comes across as if he does not give a damm about his campaign.
So unless he comes up with some blockbuster performance at a debate or some major speaking engagement, my hope for him is fading.
McCain may be able to take advantage of this apathy. Romney, no. Huckabee, no. Paul, sorry people, no. Hunter, unfortunately no, although I like the dude at least from what I have been able to hear from him.
Bottom line is the campaign on the Republican side is as muddy as a Louisiana swamp.
On the left, although not an Al Gore fan, if dude would get into the race, he would instantly be the front runner and it would be fair to say he would be a shoe in for the Democratic nomination.
He may be rethinking his “not interested” status.
