I have sometimes wondered what it might be like to be Black in America. Not that I want to try it, mind you. It seems to me that unlike most folks who have light skin, those who are darker hued have to factor race into more situations then do the paler humans. Maybe they don’t HAVE to do so, but then tend to do so. What do you think? Do you think that white Americans give race issues a quarter of the attention that Black Americans do? (And why am I capitalizing Black and not white? - is that some kind of proof that race is more important when it comes to Blacks?).

It does not surprise me that an 80 year old white male might, in his heart of hearts, believe that Negroes are mentally inferior. For one thing, it is highly unlikely that such a white male has ever in his whole life really gotten to know anyone Black. For a lot of reasons. And for anouther wasn’t it (or isn’t it still) real common for Blacks to HIDE their true selves and feelings from whites that they sensed were already “against” them? Isn’t that just human nature to keep walls up between self and those who would attack self?

I think that America is better because it is a melting pot. I think that we as a country are stronger and better because we aren’t as able to draw lines separating “us” and “them” along obvious lines or differences. Just as those from Arabic countries could not get along with each other until there was an Israel to unite against, and just as Hitler gained power by blaming his country’s economic woes upon “those outsiders,” so too might we in this country fall prey to the lure of joining together against some easily identified enemy. The truth is that Americans of all races need to drop the b.s. and realize that God (by whatever name) does not make mistakes. Only humans do! There is no superior or inferior race of human beings. The bad things that happen in this world are not due to anything God has made. They are due to the stupid choices and evil conduct on the part of humans. And racism, in whatever era or guise, is evil and stupid.
