Gay Male Teachers Most Likely to Abuse Students?

That’s the result of a survey of news stories from around the world. I add the question mark only because the numbers are so shocking I find them hard to believe:
In news stories in English across the world for 1980-2006, 902 teachers engaged in sex with 3,457 pupils. Teachers engaging in same-sex sex constituted 63% of perpetrators in Ireland, 62% in New Zealand, 60% in Canada, 54% in Scotland, 48% in Australia, 47% in England, and 35% in the U.S.
Mamoud Ahmedinejad aside, best estimates are that homosexuals make up around 2% of the population. So if 2% of the population is initiating 35%-63% of cases of sex between teachers and students, gays are either being caught at vastly disproportionate rates or, more likey, are initiating sex with students far more often. If we take the numbers at face value, the rate would be something like 40-50 times the rate of heterosexual initiated student relationships.
