“One-third of men did not bother to wash after using the bathroom”
(Link) The gender gap has widened when it comes to hygiene, according to the latest stakeout by the “hand washing police.”One-third of men did not bother to wash after using the bathroom, compared with 12 percent of women, said the researchers who spy on people in US public restrooms. They reported their latest findings Monday at a meeting of infectious disease scientists. The study is based on observations last month of more than 6 000 people in four big American cities.
“Guys need to step up to the sink,” said Brian Sansoni, spokesman for the Soap and Detergent Association, which co-sponsors the survey and related education campaigns.
Frequent hand washing is the single best thing people can do to avoid getting sick, from colds and the flu to germs lurking in food, doctors say. And a recent Harris Interactive survey found 92 percent of Americans said they usually or always wash up after using the bathroom.
But researchers for the American Society for Microbiology found that only 77 percent actually do, when it comes to public restrooms. That is a 6 percent decline from a similar study in 2005.
The dirty details:
- Atlanta’s Turner Field baseball stadium again was the worst. Only 57 percent of guys there washed up, compared to 95 percent of women.- New York was second to Chicago in cleanliness. In restrooms at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium and Museum of Science and Industry, 81 percent of men and women combined washed their hands, compared to 79 percent at New York’s Penn and Grand Central train stations.
- At San Francisco’s Ferry Terminal Farmers Market, 62.5 percent of men lathered up. Women did better, with 84 percent.
Telephone surveys by the research firm Harris Interactive show little shift in attitudes over previous polls in 2003 and 2005. The latest was of 1 001 adults between August 17 and August 20.
Nearly three-fourths of Americans said they always wash up after changing a diaper, 78 percent said they do so after handling or eating food; 42 percent after petting a dog or cat, 25 percent after handling money, and 34 percent after coughing or sneezing. - Sapa-AP
Mrs. Snoop always wonders why I’m such an anti-social curmudgeon SOB, its fucken stories like this.
The same people who travel to see the restroom made famous by Larry Craig are likely the same one who will steer clear of the sink and water after taking a dump.
You people are fuckin disgusting, I mean seriously, I truly don’t get it, I don’t understand it.
I do know that hand washing is not done for yourself; you do it FOR the people you may come in contact with.
If you want to wipe your ass incorrectly with feces between the fingers and then proceed to chomp down on a plate of hot wings that’s on you, but when you have little or no respect for the people around it’s very unlikely you would care that your personal hygiene is likely to affect those you come in contact with.
It’s no different than a person who insists on smoking in a restaurant, talking on a cell phone in a movie theatre, blasts loud rap music while driving, litter or spit on public sidewalks, cut in line, or cutting off someone in traffic.
It’s obvious that being a crude bastard is acceptable and celebrated behavior these days.
Man I already cringe when Jay Leno shakes hands with those people in the audience, I may need to avoid watching that part from now on. YUK!!

Man in technical support in a large accounting firm seen NOT washing his hands. Apparently he was in the lieu for quite some time. The witness followed him out to the community ice making machine and watched him use his hands to scoop out the cubes. A fellow co-worker related this to others. I was thankful for the fact that I do not enjoy ice!

Having cleaned an office building for 8 years I can attest to the fact that the ladies’ rooms are always messier. Perhaps one reason may be that the girls are actually using the sinks etc…. I know I am (now) compulsive about hand washing. I don’t even like to touch the door handles when I leave such public rest rooms….
