USA Today is now reporting that the Vatican has issued a clarification of the Pope’s remarks: “The statement said the pope did not intend to excommunicate anyone. Politicians who vote in favor of abortion should not receive the sacrament of Holy Communion, Lombardi said. ‘Since excommunication hasn’t been declared by the Mexican bishops, the pope has no intention himself of declaring it,” said Lombardi, who was on board the plane. ‘Legislative action in favor of abortion is incompatible with participation in the Eucharist. … Politicians exclude themselves from Communion.’” Thus the point of my original post is confirmed. The Pope is reiterating what he said to McCarrick and what so many bishops have refused to believe: Pro-abortion Catholic politicians should be excluded from Communion.

  1. Terrymum Says:

Point of clarification on Catholic “rules” for those who care:

    1. Any time a Catholic commits a “Mortal” sin (as opposed to a mere “Venial” sin) they are not supposed to receive Holy Communion (which in the Catholic church is believed to be the real body of Christ, not just some symbol of it or a nice way to remember Jesus). If you want a complete list of mortal versus venial sins, google it. But in summary, something mortally wrong is a serious sin. Like committing adultry or murder.

    2. The Catholic church teaches that murdering other people, especially innocent people, is wrong. Very wrong. A mortal sin.

    3. The Church believes that a human fetus is a human being. Thus murdering one is considered a mortal sin.

Add one through three together = someone who commits such a sin, or helps someone else to commit such a sin, should not receive communion until/unless they repent their actions and sincerely (try to) reform their future conduct.

As for clergy who encourage others to sin, that is considered a very big no-no. Because of their unique position (as ordained priests, in direct line of sucession from the Apostles), their conduct is held to a high standard. At least by the Pope.

So, for those who care…. That’s the logic. You can argue with the Pope if you do not like it or agree.
