Kerry cancels appearances over ‘botched joke’
Sen. John Kerry canceled campaign appearances with fellow Democrats today to return to Washington, saying he did not want his war of words with the White House to become a distraction in the final week before midterm elections. Link

Meredith Salsbery, a spokeswoman for candidate Tim Walz, said campaign officials were worried that the controversy would distract from Walz’s effort to unseat incumbent Republican Rep. Gil Gutknecht.
Still, she said Kerry and his advisers made the ultimate decision not to come to a rally at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Walz is an Army National Guard veteran.
