A complaint of possible racial discrimination at a Murrells Inlet restaurant has prompted a news conference today near the business, according to a spokesperson for the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Georgetown resident Rose Rock, the mother of comedian Chris Rock, said she called Sharpton’s office in August after she and her 21-year-old daughter, Andi Rock, were refused service at the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Murrells Inlet.

Officials at the restaurant chain said they are doing a “thorough investigation” of the alleged incident even though they just learned about it Tuesday afternoon.

Rock said she went to the restaurant around 4:30 p.m. May 16. After being seated, she said she saw other people being served, but neither she nor her daughter were given a menu or asked what they wanted to drink.

Around 5 p.m. Rock said she told a manager about the delay.

The manager offered them a free meal, but they refused to take it and left the restaurant, she said.

“He never called over the waitresses and asked, why did these people sit here for an hour without service?” Rock said. “The only thing he said was we could have a free meal, and neither of us wanted to eat.”

The manager later sent an apology letter and a gift package of food and coffee, Rock said.

A spokesperson for the business said they have just learned of the allegations of discrimination.

“Basically, we just heard about this a little while ago,” said Julie Davis, spokesperson for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store from the company’s Lebanon, Tenn., office. “We require all employees to read our policies that prohibit discrimination. If employees don’t follow the rules, they are disciplined, including termination. We take this very seriously.”

Rock said she was surprised by her treatment.

“I didn’t expect that to happen here,” Rock said.

Rock also said she contacted the South Carolina Human Affairs Commission and was told her complaint would be handled, but “nothing ever happened.”

The head of the commission, Jesse Washington, said Tuesday that after initial discussions, the complaint was finalized Aug. 7 and his agency also was investigating. He would not comment on the complaint.

“We get thousands of charges coming through here in the course of a year,” he said. “It’s not out of line - the time frame on this. It is being investigated and we will be in touch with her when we have a report.”

The news conference will be held at 10:45 a.m. near the Murrells Inlet restaurant, on U.S. 17 Bypass, according to a spokesperson from Sharpton’s office.

See this is why some Negros who complain about racism all the fucking time quickly lose traction.
I don’t doubt there might be some “discriminatory” practices that may take place in some isolated establishments, but the bottom line is it does not pay to discriminate.
If in the year 2006 there are still some white people who are ignorant enough to freely burn money, trust me they will be out of business in a New York minute.
I’m sure the mother of Mr. Rock is use to “star” treatment, but maybe table assignments were changed or there was a shift change or something.
But the manager offered her a “FREE FUCKING MEAL.”  Hello!
Then what further loses her credibility is she called AL SHARPTON!? What the hell for?
What was likely a small personnel issue, she wants to make this into a lunch counter sit-in protest.
Then she adds to the lack of credibility by exaggerating:

“He never called over the waitresses and asked, why did these people sit here for an hour without service?” Rock said”
Ok what was it, 30 minutes or and HOUR!

I think you white people need to get your own NAAWP and find you a white Al Sharpton.

If she truly wanted to see a change made, or someone punished, why didn’t she do what “NORMAL” people do in such situations? Make a complaint to the federal agency that has the power and authority to do something about it? In fiscal year 2005, the EEOC received 26,740 charges of race discrimination. EEOC resolved 27,411 race charges in FY 2005, and recovered $76.5 million in monetary benefits for charging parties and other aggrieved individuals (not including monetary benefits obtained through litigation). see http://www.eeoc.gov/types/race.html for more information
