KS-Gov: Former GOP party chief quits GOP
FOUND ON THE KOS, YOU MEAN LIBERALS GIVE A SHIT ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN BACKWARD ASS KANSAS!? Kathleen Sebelius, our unlikely governor in Kansas (and potential 2008 veep candidate), is a one-woman Democratic Party recruitment machine. Her modus operandi? She gets prominent Republicans to switch parties in order to run with her in the Lt. Guv slot.

The beauty is that Parkinson has been in philosophy a Democrat even since before he was the head of the GOP in Kansas. These people (GOP moderates) can switch clothes without a wrinkle…that they have been running the GOP in Kansas for 36 of the past 40 years just goes to show, well, something or other.

I think what is going on is this (and I’ve been watching party politics in Kansas up close and personal since 1987);
There was a split in the Republican party years/decades ago, with the more conservative branch beginning to tire of being called odd balls, and thus with the help of a lot of churches, they started a very sucessful campaign to push their party into roles they thought more appropriate. Those who did not like or approve of this trend are now called “RINO” by some in the Rep. part (Republican in name only). Meanwhile, the Dem’s saw how much power the new Rep. power brokers were gaining, and so they started leaning more to the right themselves. To the point that they became more moderate and espoused platforms with what used to be the core of the Rep. party.
In other words, in the last 20 years of so, both parties shifted more to the right. And personally I think this happened because the whole nation started to drift that direction (for any number of reasons).
What we are seeing now are RINO’s admitting that the new Dem’s look a whole lot more like the old Rep.’s then does the current Rep. party members in power. So the RINO’s “jumping ship” is simply a reallignment for them. They’re siding with the party that now more properly resembles their core beliefs.
What will be truly interesting in about 4-5 years is to see if enough RINO’s cum Dems can re-take power in Kansas (which has traditionally been a VERY Republican state) or whether the new more far right Rep.s’ will continue to weild the most power (in the state and nationally). That outcome will probably be determined, again, by which way the entire nation leans.
