The best example was David Duke, who as a Democrat running for prez in 1988 came in 9th, well behind the 7 dwarves. No one had heard of him but Democrats and not even many of those. Certainly no one in the mainstream press considered him important. Fast forward 4 years, Duke becomes a Republican and runs for prez again, coming in third of three candidates (Bush41, Buchanan, Duke). He didn't win a single primary. In fact, I don't know that he polled higher than 10% anywhere. But he gets all kinds of mainstream coverage and is considered by the press a serious challenger to Bush. Why? Because as a Republican he's the symbol of latent GOP racism and the guy everyone wants to vote for in their heart of hearts. Same guy, but only an important, dangerous, racist, threat-to-all-that-is-holy when he's a Republican.
