Audit Suggests Hiring More Black, Hispanic Faculty

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The University of Missouri-Kansas City has a serious problem with
its racial climate and a serious lack of diversity in its faculty, according to an audit commissioned by the school.  The audit, conducted by an assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University, also said the most racist place on campus was in campus classrooms; black and Hispanic students felt isolated on campus, and noted a graduation gap between men and women in those groups. Black and Hispanic students told auditors they often felt offended by faculty’s seemingly low expectations of them.

NOTE: This could be any of the area universities (Kansas and Missouri). You can search virtually all day and not see a black face period at KU (Lawrence). But UMKC is no different that any other university. That goes for faculty, support staff, maintenance ect. I bet at KU with a student population of 27,000 and a staff population of over 5,000 there are less than 100 black faculty and support staff all together.University environments are suppose to be more liberal and “open” but that is a bunch of bullshit.

  1. Frankie Says:

The 2000 census reported Black or African American persons in Kansas was 5.7%. In Lawrence that percentage was 5.1%. (The total population in the US is 12.3%). In 2000, the total population of Lawrence was 80,098. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/20000.html
http://www.infoplease.com/us/census/data/kansas/lawrence/ [So, taking 80,098 times 5.1% means that there are approximately 4005 Blacks living in Lawrence, including children……] So if someone could find out the approximate number of staff and students at KU (or any other college) you could check to see if the over-all population numbers (in this case 5.1% of the whole town) is showing up on campus….. The article you posted says there are 5000 staff at KU. If that’s true, then 5.1% of 5000 is about 250…. About half of the 5.1% total black population in Lawrence. However, the census did not break down ages making up that 5.1%. If you take into consideration that the 5.1% in Lawrence includes children, maybe half of that number are under the age of 18. That might impact the results (Children aren’t old enough to be professors yet). You’d have to know the total number of ADULTS in Lawrence to get a more accurate reflection of how many professors should % wise be black. If only half of the 5.1% in Lawrence are adults, then the 100 professors number doesn’t look so bad….
