“Based on decades of personal experience, articles, and studies I’ve read through the years, I’m convinced the achievement gap is exacerbated by certain factors in the black American subculture. Of course, all subcultures have issues, but I think the lack of focus on education — not just in the abstract, but as a concrete way of life — is largely absent in many black communities. At this point I’m tempted to focus only on “poor” or “uneducated” blacks, but I won’t give in to it. The gap exists among all socioeconomic classes, but so-called affirmative action benefits blacks in higher class levels the most. Families don’t have to make lots of money to supplement a child’s education at home. All they need is a precious commodity called TIME. Even if you don’t have a college degree or didn’t finish high school, you can still read to your child every day and take him to libraries and museums often…..Talking to your child, correcting mispronounced words, reading to him — these things require no money. If he’s at the homework stage, check it every night and make sure it’s done. Stay in touch with teachers and monitor your child’s progress. If there’s a problem, find out what you need to do on your end to help fix it. Join and participate in parent-teacher conferences. Parental involvement in education is crucial.” — La Shawn Barber, conservative blogger

I would respect the commentary if it wasn’t from someone with a white audience. Her #1 job is to hammer blacks so whites can say, “right on!!”

Plus, she’s unmarried (probably no prospects, either) with no kids. What does she no about kids?

I LOVE WHEN LIBERALS START TRYIN’ TO SLAM FOLKS WHO DON’T AGREE WITH THEM!

 justin,

You’re right…I don’t much respect her preaching at black parents, who won’t ever read any of her stuff anyway. I DO respect the teachers and administrators that are working their butts off to involve parents in their education. They’re too exhausted to blog and preach and they get no attention or praise from the likes of her.

Even a blind pig finds an acorn sometimes.
But as you know, these people are the first to critize what we teach our kids.
I’m always weary when black neocons run this argument.
