Like many parts of history, the Abe Lincoln story is only partially told in most classes. So we have most of America thinking he loved Blacks so much he fought to save them from slavery, when in fact his reason for going to war were a lot more complicated then that. It was, for the most, an economic decision; the south could always make cheaper goods as long as they had cheaper help. So Lincoln proposed aboliting slavery, gradually, so that there was more equality between the states. And he fought the war to save the Union. But for his time, Lincoln said quite a few non-racist things about the slaves.

In the debates, Stephen Douglas said that Lincoln of favored immediate abolition in the South and racial equality in the North. Not to refute such charges would be political suicide. Lincoln denied "all intention to bring about social and political equality between the white and black races." But he went on to affirm,

"I think the negro is included in the word `men' used in the Declaration of Independence--I believe the declaration that `all men are created equal' is the great fundamental principle upon which our free institutions rest."

Abraham Lincoln, autograph letter to James N. Brown, October 18, 1858. (Huntington Library)

So, with some judicious research, you can probably find support for hating or loving Lincoln. Just like you can for almost any position.

Nothing in this life is 100% one way. Every human being has some good and evil in them.

Some of us seem to forget that we (I) knew of all of the positive rhetoric about Abe, I grew up in a white run public school system. Remember the old phrase, “history is written by the winners” The difference in my post is I bet few if any young black people certainly young white people did not know of the racist side of his character, in my mind the true side of Lincoln.

I already knew about this particular quote:

“After seeing over 200,000 African-Americans volunteer and fight alongside Union forces, Lincoln dropped his support for plans to colonize freed slaves to Africa after the Civil War. In an 1863 speech, Lincoln stated, "there will be some black men who can remember that, with silent tongue, and clenched teeth, and steady eye, and well-poised bayonet, they have helped mankind on to this great consummation, while, I fear, there will be some white ones, unable to forget that, with malignant heart, and deceitful speech, they have strove to hinder it."

Shit, does a nigga gotta die for the white man before he can get some respect. Get real.

The reason, whites would forgive and excuse that mindset is because it is still commonplace today. “Oh he just echoed what whites thought about black in that day, we don’t feel that way about negros now.”

Read the white only comments section post. Scores of white people still walk around and behave the same damm way. They just have to be silent about it and politically correct about it.
