Before colonial America, kings decided who you were and what you believed, at least in public. The religion that the king believed was the religion you believe or you probible sat in prison for the rest of you mortal life. Protestants that fled to America weren't originally tollerant of each other. When people were hanging "witches" in Salem they were also hanging Quakers. They finally came to the realization that if they wanted religous freedom, which was there main reason for being there, they would have to start tolerating each other. This is how tolerancy began. Protestants were tolerant of other protestants. America didn't even tolerat catholics (French and indian war, Franch was catholic.) until the revolution when Franch sided with the colonists. There wasn't offical tolerance of Jews, legislation that allowed them to run for public office, until the 1900's. This happen when America basically began tolerating monotheists. Later polytheism, mostly asian religions, were tolerated in government, and finally the god-hating atheist was tolerated. Now that room has been made in the boat for atheists they have decided that it's a little over crowded and maybe the protestants should get out. Catholics too if they don't trim up a little. There are Christians in jail right now in other countries just for being Christian. Canada and Europe aren't there yet...
